Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 340 AM PDT Mon Oct 11 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Strong cold front sweeps across northern and central Nevada today. A mixture of rain and snow is expected with snow levels lowering to at or near the valley floors. Strong to high winds are expected for today and tonight for central Nevada. Continued cold Tuesday and Wednesday. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Tuesday evening. Strong cold front over northwest Nevada this morning continues to move southeast. Strong jet on the back side of upper level trough over the interior West helps drive cold front southeast today. Baroclinic cloud with widespread showers cuts across northwest Nevada and pushing east. Appears rain has switched over to snow at Owyhee per NDOT web cam on the border, and temperature sensors indicate near freezing conditions. Open trough transitions to a closed circulation over Nevada. This slows down the eastward progression of the baroclinic band. Surface front does not reach Ely until around 11 am late this morning. In the colder air, snow levels lower to near the valley floors although above freezing temperatures limit any accumulations to grassy/dirt surfaces. Slippery or slushy conditions are likely over the highway summits. Deepening surface low over southern Nevada results in strong north to south pressure gradient over the central part of the state. Expect winds to increase quickly mid morning at Tonopah where high winds are expected with gusts reaching 60 mph. On Tuesday, closed circulation still encompasses Nevada but the cold core has moved to Colorado. Gradient flow gradually weakens but still breezy at some spots tonight into morning. Gusty winds will gradually diminish by afternoon. Some snow showers will linger toward the Utah border. Still cold with highs in the 40s, with a few uppers 30s around Ely and the far northern valleys. .LONG TERM...Tuesday night through Sunday Tuesday night continues to look dry as the bulk of showers should have exited the region. Winds should be calmer than earlier in the day, and overnight lows drop into the teens and 20s. Most of the CWA is expected to remain dry through the long term period. The exception is early Wednesday morning through late Wednesday night. A weak wave looks to clip northern Nevada, and the combination of the moisture it carries and the cold temperatures means light rain and snow showers for northern Nevada are possible. There is some question to the snow level, specifically in Humboldt county, but it currently looks like the best chance for light rain could be in the valleys of Humboldt and northern Lander counties while everyone else who sees precipitation could see it as light snowfalls. Accumulations should be minimal, with the highest amounts looking to be under an inch in the higher elevations in northern Elko county. Afternoon highs are still cold in the 30s and 40s due to the strong northerly flow, with following overnight lows again in the teens and 20s. By Thursday morning, these showers are out of the way and we see dry conditions return for all, but the north/northwesterly flow helps to keep the cold temperatures in with highs again in the 30s and 40s, and following overnight lows in the teens and 20s. A weak ridge begins to influence our region, and gives our temperatures a chance to moderate while keeping us dry. Over the course of Friday through Sunday, afternoon highs climb to the 50s and 60s with overnight lows in the 20s and 30s. && .AVIATION...Poor flying conditions will continue across the KWMC- KBAM-KEKO terminals. -SHRA/-SHSN will create MVFR-IFR CIG/VSBY through the morning hours with some winds gusting to 35KT. As for KELY and KTPH, weather conditions are forecast to deteriorate rapidly towards latter portions of the mid to late morning. Winds will become strong and gusty out of the northwest once the front passes, with gusts of 45-50KT or higher at KTPH with gusts of 30-35KT at KELY. && .FIRE WEATHER... Current weather system could be a season ending event. Temperatures do moderate late in the week with valleys reaching the 60s. Overnight lows still fall below freezing.
