Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 237 AM PST Sun Dec 5 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Dry weather continues for today, though colder air will bring an end to the warm weather. Look for more active conditions starting as early as Monday morning with rain and snow showers seen throughout the day. Off and on activity is expected to continue throughout the week as a series of systems move across the region. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday night. The upper level ridge that brought the quiet weather has pushed off west into the eastern Pacific. Today, northwest flow will usher in some cooler air, though the weather will remain dry. Highs will be in the mid 40s in the north to upper 50s in the central. There will be some afternoon breezes in the northern portions of the forecast area, as well as those locations that are on the lee-sides of the mountains. It will be quiet during the first part of overnight though clouds are expected to be on the increase. By the morning hours, chances for light precipitation increases, especially in the northern sections of the forecast area. As the morning wears on, there could be some light shower activity north of the US 50 corridor. Model simulations have continued their trend downward on precipitation as the ridge in the eastern Pacific is a little more amplified and the main shortwave trough remains well west of the area and will move south of northern and central Nevada. Most of the precipitation is expected to be rain in the valleys, though mountains could see an inch or two during the Monday timeframe. Winds will be breezy during the afternoon but will stay below advisory levels. Highs on Monday will be in the mid 40s to mid 50s. Any light rain showers are expected to turn to light snow showers during the evening and night on Monday, though snow amounts in the valley locations remain at less than a half inch, though some mountain locales could see up to an inch, especially across the Jarbidge wilderness. Overnight lows will be in the 20s to near 30. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Saturday. Tuesday morning may see some residual upslope snow showers in the Jarbidge area, but these should taper off by the afternoon. Otherwise, Tuesday into Wednesday morning looks to serve as a break between "rounds" of precipitation. Some sun breaks through the clouds for most of us before the sky fills in again Tuesday night. Expect afternoon highs in the 40s to mid 50s for both days. A trough digging in from the Pacific Northwest begins to influence weather conditions Wednesday afternoon with showers in northern Nevada first before spreading across the CWA by the early morning hours of Thursday. Initial ptype is expected to be snow in the higher elevations of northern Nevada with rain in the valleys, but the cold air accompanying this system brings snow levels down quickly. Any precipitation by late morning Thursday should be snowfall, with the exception possibly being in northeastern Nye county. Snow showers persist through early Friday morning. It is important to note that guidance has been pushing back the onset and ending of precipitation as newer model runs have come in. This is lowering confidence with respect to timing, however the main message remains the same; this round of weather brings winter to the region. Temperatures trend colder over the course of Thursday onward. Highs on Thursday are expected to be mainly in the 30s and 40s before dropping into the 20s with some 30s on Friday and Saturday afternoon. Overnight lows Thursday night into Friday plummet into the teens and single digits, but Friday night is shaping up to be the coldest night when lows sit mostly in the single digits with some locations seeing subzero temps. && .AVIATION...Look for VFR conditions through the next 24 hours. SOme afternoon breezes are possible to 20KT, though stronger winds are possible across the KTPH terminal with gusts up to 35KT this afternoon and evening. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
