Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 216 PM PDT Tue Mar 17 2020 .SYNOPSIS...A persistent chilly and stormy pattern will prevail through the week. Don't put away all your winter clothes yet. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Thursday night. Nearly full latitude trough with a double center, one in the Pacific west of San Diego, and the other over northwest Nevada is evident in the water vapor imagery. The model initialization is a little off but close. Shouldn't make any real difference in the short term forecast. The trough dumb bells over the Great Basin through the short term period, but moisture levels drop off through Thursday through lower advection but also because the trajectories from the eastward trudging trough are also translated east. Hence, highest pops are tonight and then slacken through Thursday night. Generally speaking, the associated weather will be snow showers, and will slowly migrate from largely northern Nevada into central and eastern Nevada by Thursday night. High temps in the 40s pretty much everywhere Wednesday, with 40s central and some 50s northern Nevada Thursday as the system allows some northern sun. Lows mostly 20s with teens or even singles colder valleys with snow cover. .LONG TERM...Friday through next Tuesday. Lingering and weakening low pressure over Nevada will finally give way to a brief period of quiet weather Friday into Saturday though an isolated flurry or sprinkle cannot be ruled out. Daytime temperatures will moderate back up near, to a little above normal over the weekend with afternoon highs mainly in the 50s to near 60 in a few spots Saturday and Sunday. A leading, smaller Pacific low pressure system southwest of California is forecast to come ashore on Monday ahead of a stronger/bigger Pacific low dropping south off the Pacific Northwest coast. The initial low could spread some light showers into Nevada on Monday and Tuesday with a better chance of rain and snow for the middle of next week. Ensembles favor a return to cooler temperatures with wetter and potentially snowier conditions with the midweek system. && .AVIATION...Low pressure will linger over Nevada through midweek before gradually weakening and opening on Friday. A few bands or areas of scattered light showers will fall mainly as snow while impacting the region in a hit or miss fashion tonight into Thursday. As a result, scattered MVFR to isolated IFR conditions could occur in showers tonight and Wednesday. Gusty south winds will continue at KELY through early this Tuesday evening.
