.SYNOPSIS...
A powerful ocean storm will track well south and east of New England
tonight into early Saturday, but will bring very strong winds and a
period of accumulating snow to the Cape and Islands. Sunshine and
blustery conditions follow after the snow ends Saturday morning.
Fair and cold weather Saturday night, then much milder weather
follows for Sunday and Monday. Another weather system may bring
scattered showers Tuesday. Light rain or snow is possible during
Wednesday, with high pressure bringing dry conditions on
Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SATURDAY MORNING/...
*** Strong to Damaging Winds and accumulating snow for Cape Cod &
Islands
725 PM Update...
Bomb cyclone continues to deepen well to the south of Nantucket
this evening. Winds have been increasing across southeast New
England as forecast, with Nantucket Airport gusting to 47 mph
and Providence reporting 43 mph within the past hour.
Wind Advisories may need to be expanded westward into RI, for
either sustained winds of 31+ mph or gusts of 46+ mph.
Precipitation has been increasing, as well, with a mixed bag of
rain, snow, and sleet occurring from Worcester eastward to the
south shore of Boston and southward into northeast CT and
northern RI. Just plain rain in southern RI at the moment.
No changes to the forecast at this time.
Previous discussion...
Overview...
12z guidance did not offer much change from previous run so we have
continued the theme of the previous forecast. High amplitude mid
level trough/low moving off the mid Atlc coast this evening phases
with southern stream energy. Resulting 250m height fall center
yields explosive cyclogenesis with low 960s mb low tracking within
125-150 miles of the 40N/70W benchmark at its closest approach. This
is about a 40 mb drop in less than 24 hrs! Rapid deepening is in
progress with cooling tops and large pressure falls south of the
benchmark. The main impacts will be damaging winds, accumulating
snow and minor coastal flooding at high tide which will be discussed
below.
Winds...High confidence.
Given explosive cyclogenesis meeting bomb cyclone criteria we expect
damaging wind gusts, focused across Cape and Islands. While core of
strongest winds within the low level jet are offshore, 925 mb winds
peak at 50-60 kt across Cape/Islands. With cold air in the low
levels over warmer SST, near dry adiabatic low level lapse rates
will develop allowing much of this wind to mix down to the surface.
Forecast soundings support this with max gusts 55-65 mph over the
Cape/Islands, especially at Nantucket where a 70 mph gust can't be
ruled out. Timing of strongest winds will be around midnight to 7
AM. Current configuration of high wind warnings and advisories will
continue, but expanded the advisory across all of Plymouth county
and eastern Norfolk county. Expect peak gusts 45-55 mph across
eastern MA coast with 40 mph gusts back to PVD-BOS corridor.
Snowfall...Moderate confidence.
Normally a storm track over 100 miles south of the benchmark would
not produce much snow but large circulation around intense cyclone
will result in warm/moist conveyor belt expanding well to the north
across SE New Eng later tonight and early Sat. This will bring a
period of accumulating snow to Cape/Islands.
Currently temps are quite mild with readings in the 40s. Light
precip is approaching from the south and initially precip will begin
as light rain near the coast. However, temps above the surface are
plenty cold enough for snow and as precip develops and increases,
dynamic cooling will result in any rain quickly flipping to snow.
Heaviest snow expected across Cape/Islands and especially Nantucket
between midnight and 6 AM. HREF showing 60-70% probs of 1"/hr snow
over ACK for 3-4 hours late tonight. HREF as well as NAM/ECMWF
offering up to 0.25" for the Cape and up to 0.5" for Nantucket.
While boundary layer temps are marginal, heavier snowfall at night
will accumulate on road surfaces, as temps fall to freezing. Will
continue with accums of 2-4" for Cape Cod/MVY with 3-6" for
Nantucket. Low risk for 6"+ for Nantucket if heavier bands persist
longer and push further NW, but this is not certain and will have to
monitor latest trends tonight. The strong winds will result in poor
vsbys with blowing snow.
A bit more uncertainty regarding snowfall further inland from the
Cape along the south coast and SE MA. Precip intensity is expected
to be light which will struggle to accumulate on paved surfaces.
Also, guidance is indicating some drying moving in after 06z. As a
result, forecast accum for RI and SE MA is less than an inch with
perhaps 1-2" for south coastal MA near the Cape Cod Canal.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
Saturday...
Snow will be exiting the Cape and Islands Sat morning, moving east
of Nantucket by mid morning. This will be followed by increasing
sunshine from west to east. Strong to damaging wind gusts to start
the morning on the Cape/Islands but winds will gradually diminish
through the day. Highs upper 30s to lower 40s but will feel colder
given gusty north winds.
Fire weather...Gusty north winds combined with relative humidities
dropping to 20-25 percent will result in elevated fire risk
especially in the interior.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...

* Dry and quiet weather during Saturday night through much of
Monday.
* Temperatures near seasonable Saturday night, then temperatures
above normal through the remainder of the period
* Fairly active pattern next week with quick hitting systems
bringing chances for precipitation
Details...
Saturday night through Monday...
Mid level trough moves further offshore Saturday night, with broad
westerly flow and weak ridging to follow Sunday through Monday. At
the surface, a large area of high pressure will be
slowly crossing through the southeast U.S., with ridging from that
high extending into southern New England.
There is a modest increase in moisture aloft during Saturday
night/early Sunday, as a weak short wave moves through the flow
aloft. However only expecting some increase in clouds, weather
should remain dry for that timeframe as well. Overall during
Saturday night through Monday, looking at mostly
clear/mostly sunny skies for much of the period. During Monday
afternoon there may be some increase in cloud cover as a warm front
sets up across northern New England.
Saturday night will be the coldest night of the long term forecast
period, in the 20s for much of the area. Sunday and Monday will be
increasingly mild, with highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s Sunday,
and mid 50s to mid 60s for much of the area Monday.
Monday night through Tuesday night...
Uncertainty on track and impacts associated with a low pressure
system tracking from the mid Mississippi River Valley through the
Great Lakes Region during this timeframe. The warm front associated
with the low should extend eastward into northern New England.
With this forecast package, continue to see precipitation chances
are limited during Monday night, but increase for Tuesday. Still
does not look to be a washout, but would could have considerable
cloudiness during this period. We appear to have a very brief break
in precip chances Tue night. Utilizing a model blend of guidance
for this timeframe.
Wednesday through Friday...
A robust mid level trough digs southward and through New
England Wednesday into Thu. This trough may prompt development
of a coastal/offshore low and precipitation to southern New
England. Still enough spread among guidance that it is hard to
pin point how things will progress. At this point will have
chance pops for rain/snow.
During Thursday a mid level ridge axis and surface high pressure
should make a brief appearance over our area. Then there is more
uncertainty by Friday on whether or not another low pressure brings
precipitation to our region. There are some significant differences
in comparison to the previous runs of these models, so have kept the
blend of model guidance this far out.

Tonight...Moderate confidence. Vsbys lowering to IFR/LIFR as a
period of moderate/heavy snow develops over ACK and portions of
Cape Cod 06-12z. Elsewhere, MVFR cigs developing and some vsby
restriction in light snow possible along the south coast and SE
MA up to about PVD-TAN- PYM. Accumulations 2-4" Cape Cod and
3-6" over ACK. Winds increase through this evening with peak
gusts from the N 50-55 kt over Cape/Islands 06-12z. Gusts to 60
kt possible over ACK. Gusts drop off to around 35 kt back to
BOS-PVD and 20-25 kt farther in the interior.
Saturday...High confidence.
Snow exits outer Cape/Islands 12-15z with improvement to VFR and
clearing skies. VFR elsewhere. Gusts 40-50 kt Cape/Islands to
start but gradually diminishing through the day to 20-30 kt by
late day.
KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF. A period of MVFR cigs
tonight. Some light snow or flurries possible but not expecting
any accumulation or vsby restrictions. Gusts 35-40 kt
developing, and peaking 06-12Z.
KBDL Terminal...High confidence in the TAF.

Saturday morning. Strongest gusts south and east of Nantucket where
low risk for hurricane force gusts. Seas build to 20+ feet over
waters east of Cape Cod. Winds and seas slowly subside through the
day Saturday.

There will be an elevated fire risk during Saturday for areas
that do not receive appreciable snow or light rain. This should
include much of interior MA, north central/northeast CT, and
also at least a portion of RI. With skies becoming sunny/mostly
sunny and surface dew points dropping into the single digits,
minimum RH values in these areas are expected to dip to dip to
below 25 percent. Strongest wind gusts will be in the morning,
peaking out at 20 to 30 mph across interior SNE but higher gusts
25-35 mph in the I-495 region and into RI. Winds gradually
diminish during the day.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
410 PM update...
Powerful low passing south of New Eng with storm force winds will
result in up to a 2 ft storm surge late tonight into Sat morning.
Combined with wave action, expect areas of minor flooding along east
coastal MA during the time of high tide Sat morning. Coastal flood
advisory was expanded north along the coast to Boston and coastal
Essex county. While winds will be north at this time, enough wave
energy directed toward the coast from prior NE flow. With strong
north winds, storm surge could reach 2-3 ft over Cape Cod Bay and
Nantucket Harbor with more widespread minor flooding anticipated.
And a low risk for low end moderate flooding for Nantucket.
Along the south coast of RI, up to a 2 ft surge is forecast at high
tide around 5-6 am. This could bring some splashover along the coast
but northerly winds should limit extent of flooding.
