High Wind in Idaho, September 7 to 8, 2020

A SUV pulling a camper/trailer overturned on interstate 15 south of Malad Summit due to high crosswinds. The two passengers suffered minor injuries. A 52 mph wind speed was measured 4 miles east southeast of Weston at 7:49 PM MDT. A metal roof was blown off a hay barn in Clifton at around 745 pm MDT.

Sawtooth search and rescue reported more than 30 trees down across the Stanley Basin area with back country roads blocked. The Beaver Creek area was especially hard hit.

Strong northeast winds occurred with the public reporting a 55 mph gust near Gannett and the mesonet reporting 50 mph just west of Hailey. Large tree limbs being shorn off trees reported in Bellevue.

A powerful cold front brought damaging winds to the Arco-Mud Lake Desert region. A 77 mph wind gust was measured 6 miles northwest of Atomic City with 73 mph 12 miles east of Howe. 40 to 50 mph sustained winds were recorded for several hours. Several mesonet sites also recorded 60 to 70 mph gusts during the event. A front porch roof was ripped off a residence in Monteview at around 5 pm MDT. A power pole was snapped in half 8 miles northwest of Monteview. Large tree uprooted 3 miles north of Monteview with numerous tree limbs down along Monteview Highway. Powerlines were reported downed with power out in Mud Lake. Most of this damage reported at around the 5 pm MDT hour. Several power poles and trees downed along Idaho Higway 33 near Terreton. A large tree was downed on a house in Terreton as well. A wind profiler was destroyed at one of the Idaho National Laboratory mesonet sites estimated 200 thusand dollars damage.

A 72 mph wind gust measured at the mesonet site 18 miles north northeast of Berniece. 71 mph was measured 4 miles south southeast of Spencer. And several 60 to 66 mph gusts measured near Dubois.

Several small branches off trees reported downed in Soda Springs at 645 pm MDT and a large tree reported down in Bancroft at approximately 9 pm MDT.

Widespread 40 to 50 mph sustained winds with gusts as high as 73 mph affected the Eastern Magic Valley on Labor Day. The UPR site 8 miles north of Coldwater recorded a 73 mph gust with 71 mph at the RAWS at Raft River and 68 mph 6 miles west northwest of Minidoka. Multiple trees and power lines down at the Rupert Idaho Youth Ranch. One large tree was uprooted and down on a residence. Time estimated at 6:30 PN MDT. Several power outages also reported in Rupert. A pine tree was blown down near Milner Dam 11 miles west of Burley around 8:10 Pm MDT. Damage to outbuildings and sheds reported in Declo around 8:15 PM MDT. A large tree was reported down in Burley at 8:30 PM. A large pine tree was uprooted in Springdale area 3 miles west of Declo at 8:30 PM MDT. Numerous trees and tree limbs reported down in Rupert and Minidoka by the public at 9 PM. United Electirc CO-OP reported numerous power outages in Burley, Paul, Acequia, Rupert and Heyburn due to the wind damage. Large tree rported down in Heyburn at 9 PM.

Sustained winds reached 40 to 50 mph with gusts as high as 67 mph at Dead Man Canyon. Damaging winds reported between Arco and Darlington with 2 large trees reported down in Moore at 5:27 PM MDT. AT 5: 54 PM MDT several trees reported down between Mackay and Darlington with one tree lying across Highway 93 in Mackay. A tree was also reported on a powerline in Moore with many downed trees 10 to 12 inches in diameter.

A strong cold frontal passage brought sustained northeast winds of 40 to 50 mph at times with gusts over 60 mph. The Aberdeen mesonet recorded 66 mph and 1 mile east northeast of Aberdeen recorded the peak of 71 mph. The Pocatello ASOS recorded a gust of 64 mph at 5:28 PM. Metal roof blown off a residence on Reservation Rd between N Laughran Rd and N Rio Vista Rd. Building under construction collapsed behind Ace Hardware in Aberdeen. Tree down along Hiline Rd south of Edmo Rd in Fort Hall. Large tree down blocking W Bullard Rd just west of N Hwthorne Rd 3 miles south southwest of fort Hall. 2 trees down and wooden fence blown down 3 miles east of Pocatello. Large, Mature pine tree uprooted in the city of American Falls. 3 trees down at Restlawn Cemetery/Memorial Gardens in Pocatello.

6:10-6:30 PM... Uprooted Russian olive tree at 7th and East Young Streets in Pocatello. 59 to 60 foot tree uprooted on Vista Dr in Pocatello. Large tree limbs down including along E Chapel Rd and along Wilson Ave in Pocatello. 4 large trees uprooted at a property between American Falls and Aberdeen.

6:50 PM..........Sections of metal roof peeled off an outbuilding in Highland Meadows area of Chubbuck. NWS employee reported tree damage and damage to home in Moreland. 7:15 PM...Numerous 6 inch diameter tree limbs down in Moreland.

7:25-8:00 PM...Traffic lights down at Main and Garrett Way in Pocatello. Large tree down on a house along Williams Ave near Syringa elementary school in Pocatello. Large spruce tree down on Ada Ave in Pocatello. Numerous large trees reported down in Blackfoot including blocking roads and power lines down.

8:15 PM....Large tree down taking down a wooden fence and power lines on E 825 N near N 675 E in Basalt. Large tree down in Hawthorne Park in Pocatello.

11:55 PM...Multiple large trees uprooted or snapped off at Pocatello Regional Airport.

1:15-130 AM...Large, mature trees were uprooted and fell on two neighboring homes on Lee St in American Falls. Roof damage to 2 residences and 1 garage off of Government Rd in Machaud. Portions of multiple trees and numerous limbs down. 2 miles west of Pocatello airport multiple tree limbs down in vicinity of Falcon Circle E and Falcon Circle N with minor damage to an outbuilding.

2:00 AM....Large Box Elder tree uprooted destroying part of a wood deck near intersection of Tyhee Rd and N Rio Vista Rd. in west Pocatello. |2:50 AM....Two additional large trees uprooted along Tyhee Ave in American Falls.

Multiple other damage reports reported after the fact during the morning of September 8th of trees downed and minor residence damages and power lines down.

Monetary damage reports still being gathered but estimated over a million dollars.

Trees and large limbs reported down in Inkom by COOP observer and a small 2 X 4 wood and sheet metal outbuilding destroyed. Multiple trees downed at a ranch/residence along Old Arbon Valley Rd south of Gardner Rd. Portions of a roof and sides blown off a large barn at Windy Acres Farm.

Forty to 50 mph sustained winds along with peak gusts of 73 mph 9 miles west of Black Pine, and 69 mph at the Yale ITD site brought some damage to the Raft River region. An Irrigation pivot was blown over along E Heglar Canyon Rd near Heglar.

A strong cold front brought sustained winds of 40 mph out of the northeast with a peak gust of 62 mph 13 miles south of Craters of the Moon. 50 to 60 mph gusts were reported in Richfield. Tree limbs and power lines were reported down in Shoshone by 7:30 PM MDT.

Strong northerly winds were sustained over 40 mph with a peak gust of 62 mph 4 miles east southeast of Basin. Gust of 50 to 60 mph were common. An outbuilding was reported blown over along S Elba Almo Rd in Almo.

A pine tree was reported snapped off just above the base in Ashton.

A powerful cold front shifted winds to the northeast and sustained over 40 mph with gusts over 60 mph. The peak gust was 65 mph 12 miles west of Osgood with the Idaho Falls ASOS recording 62 mph. Extensive damage reported as well by the public...law enforcement and spotters. |4:30 PM MDT.....Large tree down on a garage in Idaho Falls. 45 foot by 25 foot high metal roof structure flipped from ground anchors and blown into neighbors pasture breaking rhough a wooden fence 5 miles east northeast of Shelley. Two powerlines downed at interseciton of Woodruff and Lincoln Roads in Idaho Falls. |Approximately 4:45 PM MDT the public witnessed a flying tree branch shatter a windshield of a Suburban along N 55th E in Idaho Falls. |5:30-6 PM MDT....A large tree downed in Newdale. A metal storage shed blown over in Rigby. Large tree limbs and power lines across the road on N 4300 E near County Line Rd west of Ririe. Top portion of power pole and large tree snapped off in Rigby. |By 6:15 PM numerous reports of large trees and tree limbs down throughout Rigby. By 6:30 PM 3,000 customers without power in Idaho Falls reported by Rocky Mountain Power. Widspread reports of trees and power lines down by 7: 15 PM in Rexburg and Madison County. Tree damage and damage to outbuildings at Mountain River Campground in the Heise area near Poplar. |8:00 PM MDT....Tree downed on vehicle on Clubhouse Circle off of St Clair Rd in Idaho Falls. Trees and power lines reported down in Lewisville. A portion of hay barn collapsed in Menan with siding removed from a residence. 8:30-9:00 PM MDT in Rexburg....Multiple trees uprooted. An awning broke off and smashed a glass door to a business. Traffic lights out in the city of Rexburg. 2 trees uprooted at a Rexburg bench residence. |9:45 PM -10:00 PM MDT....A small airplane flipped over at the Idaho Falls regional airport. Idaho State University emergency management reported 4 trees down along with siding damage to a building at their Idaho Falls campus. Over 14,000 Rocky Mountain Power customers without power north of Idaho Falls due to the wqind damage including over 8,000 in the Rexburg area. At 10:45 Pm a sign blown out at the Rexburg Grease Monkey.

Many reports of large trees down in Madison County in the Rexburg, Archer and Thornton areas. Large uprooted trees damaged headstones in Cemetery in Burton near Thornton. US Highway 20 blocked at 2 am MDT just west of Idaho Falls due to downed power lines between New Sweden School Rd and Old Butte Highway.

Several more unspecified reports of damage occurring with no time frame of when it occurred were received. This included a barn destroyed in Ucon, Trees on homes, vehicles, outbuldings destroyed in Ammon and Idaho Falls.
