.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday.
Have kept the high wind warnings and advisories in effect until 9
pm. Clearing has been slow to move into the warned areas but will
later this afternoon and winds should rapidly increase as that
happens. Will have rain and snow showers and isolated
thunderstorms in the mountains with snow levels around 7 thousand
feet. Will have very cold conditions Friday with afternoon showers
and thunderstorms again mainly in the mountains with snow levels
remaining in the 7 thousand foot range. Winds will be much lighter
on Friday as well. Little change Saturday with slight warming but
still well below normal and afternoon mainly mountain showers and
thunderstorms. The slight warming trend will continue Sunday and
the mountain showers and thunderstorms will continue but again
decrease in coverage.
GK
.LONG TERM...Saturday night through next Thursday. Flow across the
region will be in transition late in the weekend as the cold low
currently swinging into the region lifts into southern Canada while
weakening. At the same time, a new low pressure system will be
taking shape across British Columbia, and this low is forecast to
slowly meander south and east through early week. The low is then
forecast to be positioned just off of the WA/OR coast by Tuesday.
For midweek, guidance begins to diverge on just how far inland the
low will progress, with some taking the low into our area while
others keep it to our west. In any event, the flow will become
southwesterly by Monday, and this will allow temperatures to warm to
near climatological averages for late June. Isolated afternoon/early
evening showers will be possible (mainly across higher terrain
areas) each day. Individual disturbances embedded in the flow will
be difficult to time at these time scales, but the occasional
stronger storm can't be ruled out given the nature of the pattern.
Should the low move overhead by midweek, a return to cool, showery
conditions will be realized. AD
&&
.AVIATION...Main impact this afternoon and evening will be very
strong winds with 20 to 30 knot sustained winds through 03z with
40 to 50 knot gusts at BYI, IDA and PIH. Will have VFR conditions
through Friday. Winds should die down after 03z and be much less
on Friday.
GK
&&
.HYDROLOGY...The flood advisory remains in place for the Big Wood
River at Hailey as it remains below flood stage but still at
bankfull for several more days.
GK
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Winds so far today have been suppressed due to
extensive cloud cover that developed in advance of a strong
disturbance. Per satellite imagery, dry air aloft is quickly
streaming into the area, and this should allow for a rapid uptick in
winds late this afternoon and early evening -- and this is when
winds will be at their strongest. Still expecting the strongest
winds to occur across zone 410, with peak gusts from the W/SW once
again potentially topping 60 mph around INL. Elsewhere, gusts in the
45-55 mph range will be common across 425 as well as portions of
427, particularly on mid/upper slopes. Winds across 476, 475 and 422
will be lighter, but may still reach or briefly exceed 35 mph at mid
and upper slopes. For 413, strongest winds will be across the
northern portions of the zone, with 45-55 mph winds at mid/upper
slopes and gusts around 35 mph for the far southeast corner. Winds
will quickly subside overnight and remain below critical levels
Friday and Saturday, but afternoon/early evening breezes reaching 15-
25 mph will be common, especially across the eastern Magic Valley,
Snake Plain and mid/upper slopes. Similar breeziness is then
forecast through the week, with no single day showing signs of light
wind.
In terms of temperatures and relative humidity, temps will be
near/just above record cool values for this time of year tonight
through Saturday, with a rebound to 10 degrees below seasonal
averages for Saturday. By Sunday/Monday, temperatures should return
to near typical values for this time of year, or just below them. RH
will be elevated given the cool, moist airmass that will be in place
through Saturday. The airmass does begin to dry out on Sunday, when
min RH values approach 20 percent across 425. The drying trend is
forecast to continue on Monday with min RH reaching 15-20% across
425, much of 410 and the valleys across 476, with similar min RH
values forecast into the middle of next week.
For precipitation, expecting rain and snow showers this evening
across the Central Mountains (Salmon-Challis NF) and east along the
Montana border. Have seen some lightning near Salmon as of this
writing. On/off showers continue overnight for these areas with snow
levels dropping as low as 5,000-6,000 ft. As mentioned in the
previous discussion, showers on Friday favor Central Mountains, 410
and 411 during the afternoon and early evening hours, with some
showers possibly extending south to eastern portions of 413.
Coverage is a bit less for Saturday. Isolated shower and
thunderstorms are then possible each afternoon/early evening across
the Central Mountains, Island Park and Continental Divide regions
each day through midweek as stout SW flow develops ahead of a
western Pacific trough. AD
