.SHORT TERM...Low pressure to the west is currently deepening over
the northern Gulf. As this deepens, the increasing pressure
gradient will cause the winds to increase region wide, inspiring a
slew of gale warnings over the marine zones, and strong wind
statements over most land areas. The strongest winds will be
expected overnight tonight into tomorrow morning before the low
begins to fill during the day Monday.
A front associated with the low is bringing ample moisture to the
region.Subtle warm air advection behind this front has been
conducive to most locations seeing rain with the exception of
areas around the Haines and Klondike highways where enough of a
drainage wind has kept conditions cold enough to maintain a light
snow for much of the day. Expect that snow should continue through
the evening here with 2-4 inches anticipated near the Canadian
border. Further, over on the other side of the coastal range at
our interior location at Hyder, temps are expected to remain cold
enough to squeeze out about 6-8 inches tonight and tomorrow.
Precip chances continue to be high, region wide, through Monday
before beginning to diminish Monday night.
Model agreement continues to be pretty good so continued leaning
on the GFS as per the previous forecast. Because of the complexity
of the actual situation on the ground though, forecast confidence
is average.
.LONG TERM.../Tuesday through Sunday as of 10 pm Saturday/ Looks
like a weakening low will drift E across the northern gulf Tue-Wed
After then, the model differences remain quite large for the late
week time frame, as they struggle handling stream interaction in
a split flow environment. Later on, looks like a strong Aleutian
low/+PNA pattern will evolve next weekend into the following
week.
Should be a gradual cooling trend into Wed as westerly flow
brings in some modified cold air. May see some snow try to at
least mix in especially by Wed. This will also lead to stronger W
winds for the gulf in the cold advection environment, with gales
likely. After that, some colder air may try to move in from the N
for late week, but forecast confidence in this is very low attm
due to the model differences. There is also potential for some
snow during the late week period, depending on how much
interaction between northern and southern stream shortwaves
occurs. The development of the strong Aleutian low/+PNA pattern by
next weekend into the following week would mean a return to warm
and wet conditions.
