Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 139 AM PDT Fri Nov 2 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Warmer temperatures are expected Friday, with breezy to windy conditions and some showers in northern Elko County north of I80. Cooler on Saturday with the next system expected to enter northeast Nevada on Sunday, bringing some showers and winds. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday night. A weak ridge today will pass east as flow turns northwest aloft and the thickness/thermal wind gradient tightens and stronger winds mix down to the surface today. Expecting breezy conditions everywhere, but windy in northern Elko County and especially in northeast Elko County. Winds could exceed 40 mph in the northeast with 50+ mph over the ridges and passes. No advisory has been issued because of the expected limited geographic and temporal extent of the highest winds. Along with the winds, expecting light rain or flurries in the northeast, too, through Friday night. Saturday, the winds decrease and air dries out over the region, but another short wave Sunday/Sunday night brings more breeziness to most of the region, and rain/snow showers to an area northeast of about Denio to Ely. Temps drop from Friday's warmth, enough to be noticeable Saturday and Sunday, but not drastically. .LONG TERM...Monday through next Friday. A cool/dry northwest flow aloft will persist across Nevada through next week following a shortwave that will produce some light valley rain/snow showers and mountain snows in mainly Humboldt and Elko counties on Sunday. Over the next several days, the coldest air and intermittent, heavier mountain snows will continue to pass north and east of the state across portions of Idaho, Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. A weak shortwave may have enough moisture to cause some light snow showers in the mountains of northern Elko County by next Friday. Otherwise, model blend minimum temperatures were adjusted downward especially on Tuesday and Thursday mornings given recent performance of being too warm under similar conditions. Cool and predominantly dry early November weather will prevail next week with afternoon highs in the 40s northeast, 50s most everywhere else, but around 60 farther south in Nye County, while nighttime lows generally range from 10 to 25 degrees. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected through Friday night. However, gusty afternoon winds up to 30 kt will develop across the state Friday afternoon with the highest winds along and north of the I-80 corridor in northern Nevada. && .FIRE WEATHER...Breezy over northern Nevada through Friday evening with northeast Nevada getting winds of 40 mph in valleys and isolated spots of 50+ mph over ridges and passes. Isolated rain/snow showers over northeast Nevada. Saturday dry and a little breezy most places.
