Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 318 PM PST Mon Feb 26 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Active weather pattern returns by the end of the week with additional winter storms expected. Temperatures are expected to remain below normal and travel may be affected from time to time. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday. Current system is moving significantly slower than previously thought. The upper level center is situated over California with a surface low centered over the central valley of California. As a result, this is keeping the bulk of the energy west of the Sierra. A stationary front extends ENE from the aforementioned sfc low into NV and southern ID. This has triggered sporadic light snow showers along the front. As the upper level low continues to sag southeast more moisture is expected to ride up and over the Sierra and interact with this front. This will lead to an uptick in the snow shower activity and intensity. A winter storm warning has been issued for the Rubies, south central Elko, and southern Lander/Eureka cos., where we expected the heaviest snow to occur with amounts of 3-5 inches and locally higher amounts in mountains. Winter weather advisories for everywhere else with the exception of Humboldt county will continue through the night and end from north to south starting Tuesday morning. Wednesday and Thursday. A brief break in the weather comes Wednesday with a shortwave ridge pushing across the state. By Thursday morning a new Pacific storm will push a warm front across the state allowing for broad southwesterly flow to return. Temperatures are expected to warm into the low 40s for most areas with some western and southwest central locations reaching into the mid 40s and even a 50 or two. Some light precipitation will accompany the warm front in the form of rain/snow showers. The bulk of the precipitation will occur Thursday night into Friday as the cold front moves through. .LONG TERM...Thursday night through Monday. The period begins with deep cold upper trough settling in over the region bringing snow and much below normal temperatures. By Sunday upper trough begins to exit to the east for decreasing snow shower activity. All snow shower activity will end by Monday as upper ridge begins to nose into the region from the west. && .AVIATION...Conditions will improve to VFR at KWMC aft 02z as snow band moves to the south. Expecting light to moderate snow to begin at KEKO around 04z with MVFR and occasional IFR conditions. Conditions will improve aft 15z. Light to moderate snow will begin at KTPH/KELY around 06z with MVFR and occasional IFR conditions. These conditions are expected to persist thru 21z Tue. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
