Low pressure over New York City early in the morning on November 3rd rapidly intensified as it moved northeastward across New England. Heavy rain occurred in the early morning hours, with generally 1.50 to 2.50 inches in eastern sections of southern New England and up to 3.66 inches in the slopes of the Berkshires. A few severe thunderstorms moved from Rhode Island into eastern Massachusetts around daybreak. As the strong low passed to our north, strong to damaging westerly winds developed during the afternoon.

Low pressure over New Jersey at predawn will intensify rapidly
and move through New England today bringing periods of heavy
rain this morning followed by dry weather this afternoon but
accompanied by a period of strong to damaging winds. High
pressure Sunday provides dry cool weather along with light
winds to close out the weekend. Wet weather may return early
next week.

440 AM update...
Heavy Rain/Flood Threat...
Negative tilt trough in the Mid Atlc states capturing a
tropical plume of moisture (PWATs up to 1.8 inches) up the
eastern seaboard into southern New England this morning,
resulting in periods of heavy rain. Received a rainfall report
of 3.62 inches from Turner Falls in western MA. In addition the
North Branch of the Park River in Hartford county was
approaching flood stage. This combined with periods of heavy
rain continuing until 6 am to 10 am from southwest to northeast,
decided to issue a flood watch to communicate the risk of
flooding this morning. Heaviest rain will be across northern CT
into northern MA. Model consensus including Hi Res guidance is
for storm total rainfall of 1-3 inches with isolated amounts up
to 4 inches, highest totals across western-central MA. By mid to
late morning rain ends with dry weather this afternoon.
Severe Weather Threat...
Impressive warm sector for this time of year over southern New
England this morning with dew pts in the low to mid 60s and
temps in the mid to upper 60s! Specifically at 4 am it's 68 at
Norwood! Frontal boundary has just cleared Boston with a wind
shift to the NW. Thus any chance for a strong thunderstorm
would be in the warm sector across eastern CT/RI into southeast
MA. Low level jet enhancing low level helocity in this area.
Convection south of New England beginning to intensify as strong
forcing for ascent moves over this region with mid level trough
taking on a negative tilt combined with 170 kt RRQ of upper
level jet streak. Specifically will have to watch line segments
beginning to form over central Long Island and the adjacent
ocean waters as it tracks northeast into the warm sector over RI
and southeast MA especially near frontal boundary where low
risk for rotating storms. Low risk is valid until about 13z-14z
then cold front sweeps across the region.
Strong to Damaging winds...
As negative tilt trough sweeps northeast frontal wave deepens
rapidly from about 1000 mb near NYC at 09z to 983 mb low over
Maine late today. This will be accompanied by a strong pressure
rise-fall couplet that will enhance the isallobaric wind
component. In addition strong CAA on the backside of the low
will steep low level lapse rates and aid momentum wind transfer
from aloft. These two mechanisms will support wind gusts up to
60 mph which is supported by both NAM and GFS bukfit soundings.
Two areas of strong wind, 1) over Cape Cod and Islands with
steeper low level lapse rates due to relatively warm ocean
waters helping wind transfer from aloft and 2) over northeast MA
from the Worcester Hills into the Greater Boston area. As low
intensifies from south to north wind field increases, thus
stronger winds northward from northeast MA into ME. Therefore
will keep current configuration of headlines unchanged with High
Wind Warnings Cape Cod, Islands and northeast MA from Worcester
Hills to Greater Boston area. Greatest risk for tree damage and
isolated power outages will exist in the High Wind Warning area.
Temperatures...
Very mild this morning across eastern CT-RI into southeast MA
with temps well into the 60s. Elsewhere cooler with temps in the
50s as frontal boundary continues to sag south. All areas fall
into the 40s this afternoon as strong cold front sweeps across
the area. Very strong west winds this afternoon will add to the
developing chilly conditions.

abundant sunshine and light winds.

Monday ... Incipient low along the stalled frontal boundary draped
over the SE CONUS lifts N. Increasing isentropic lift beneath ascent
ahead of parent weak mid-level vortmax energy and H3 RRQ jet streak.
Decent precipitable waters, a bit of elevated instability, thinking
widespread rain with embedded heavier showers given some convective
indices at or slightly above thresholds. This within a cooler air-
mass as E/NE flow prevails, isallobarically driven by earlier high
pressure now NE up against the low approaching from the SW.
Tuesday ... Abundance of moisture as the surface low passes S/E. A
surface boundary remains kinked round New England along which we'll
see abundant moisture. Element of lift, expect low clouds, drizzle
to linger, cooler conditions prevailing with continued E/NE onshore
flow.
Wednesday ... Stronger, inside-runner low over the Great Lakes. Will
see flow revert S right before a sweeping cold front. Forecast model
timing discrepancies however consistent signal of a sharp cold front
yielding lift beneath favorable dynamics. Looking at a line of wide-
spread rain with embedded heavier showers, maybe a rumble of thunder
if instability is able to nudge far N. Likely will contend with some
of the S flow being breezy, especially along the S-coast. Clearing
out late within the dry slow, colder air held well back N/W.
Thursday onward ... Inside runner low lifting out as an area of N
Pacific low pressure continues, will see colder, Arctic air become
sheared S along with high pressure into S/SE Canada. Some snow cover
over Canada, however likely the airmass will moderate as it sweeps
along the US / Canada border. Cold, dry conditions following a re-
inforcing cold front and maybe some showers come Saturday. Prior to,
a pretty average Autumn pattern, but may have to watch energy that
ejects along the stalled frontal boundary offshore, whether any weak
areas of low pressure can develop and be pulled back NW beneath the
continued broader H5 troughing aloft.

In Blackstone, Main Street was closed due to flooding. A car was stuck in flood waters on Main Street near CVS Pharmacy.
In Randolph, a tree was down on Clark Street.
Street flooding in Shrewsbury at Fairview Street and Quinsigamond Ave.
In Middleton, there was significant flooding on a portion of Maple Street.
In Lawrence, there were flooded streets at Water Street and Marble Avenue.
In Framingham, Route 9 was closed at Oakcrest Drive due to flooding.
In Dorchester, Morrissey Boulevard at Tolman Street was closed due to flooding.
In Franklin, the I-495 exit southbound ramp to King Street was completely flooded and was reaching up to car doors.
In Kingston, a car was stuck in two feet of water on Marion Drive near the railroad tracks.
In South Weymouth, Columbian Street was closed at Nevin Street due to flooding. A car was stuck in the flood waters.
In Montague at 1228 PM EDT, a tree and wires were down on Ripley Road near the train tracks and at 1246 PM, a tree was down on wires on Park Street. In Northfield, a tree was down on West Road at 1236 PM and a tree and wires were down on Caldwell Road at 1240 PM. In Leverett at 153 PM, a tree was down on wires at Hemenway and Mill Yard Roads, which were blocked. Wind gusts were mostly around 50 mph.
In West Springfield at 1255 PM EDT, a tree and wires were down on Morgan Road. In Chicopee at 207 PM, a tree was reported down on James Street. At 300 PM, in West Springfield again, a tree was down on Dewey Street and a tree was down on a car on Westfield Street.
High winds impacted Cape Cod during the afternoon hours with sustained winds at 40 to 50 mph and gusts of 50 to 60 mph. At 1244 PM EDT in Eastham, a trained spotter reported sustained winds of 40 mph. At 230 PM in Bourne, a NWS Hydrometeorological Automated Data System (HADS) reported sustained winds of 48 mph. At 3 PM, a mesonet site in Eastham recorded both sustained winds of 47 mph and gusts to 59 mph. At 311 PM, a trained spotter in East Falmouth reported sustained winds of 41 mph. At 316 PM, a mesonet site at Kalmus Beach in Hyannis recorded both sustained winds of 48 mph and gusts to 59 mph. As for damage, in Sandwich at 307 PM, a utility pole was broken and wires were down on Beale Avenue. In Brewster at 319 PM, a tree was down on Susan Lane. In Falmouth at 319 PM, two oak trees were down on Vidal Avenue - one of them was a the intersection of Old Meeting House Road.
In Conway at 140 PM EDT, a tree was down onto a house on Hart Road. A vehicle also was damaged. In Shelburne Falls at 202 PM, a tree was down on Route 2 near an auto dealership.
Winds gusted to 45-50 mph across northern Worcester County. At 259 PM EDT, the Fitchburg ASOS reported a gust to 46 mph. At 146 PM EDT, in Harvard, a tree was down on Woodside Road. In Leominster at 304 PM, a one-foot diameter tree was down on Beth Avenue and at 420 PM a tree was down on Exchange Street.
At 300 PM EDT, the Worcester Airport ASOS measured a wind gust to 51 mph. In Charlton at 139 PM EDT, a tree fell onto a moving vehicle on Old Spencer Road and fortunately, there were no injuries. In Milford at 202 PM, a tree was down on Longview Drive. In Oxford at 203 PM, a tree was down onto railroad tracks midway between Federal Hill Road and Dana Road.
In Hatfield at 328 PM EDT, a tree was reported down on wires on Pantry Road.
In Chelmsford at 155 PM EDT, a tree was down on Littleton Road. In Billerica at 157 PM, a large tree and wires were down on Springs Road. In Framingham at 212 PM, a tree was down on Parmenter Road. In Lowell at 227 PM, a tree fell onto a house on Sanders Avenue and a tree was down on wires on Holyrood Avenue. In Wilmington at 231 PM, a tree fell onto a car on West Street with no injuries. In Marlboro at 243 PM, a tree was down on Solomon Pond Road, which was impassable. In Tyngsboro at 525 PM, a tree was down on Route 3 southbound at Exit 34. In Chelmsford at 523 PM, a tree was down on power lines on Parker Road and a tree was down on wires on Bartlett Street. In Lowell at 534 PM, a tree crashed through a home with damage into the floor of the home on Pawtucket Boulevard.
In Taunton, at 200 PM EDT, a tree was down on Danforth Street and at 238 PM a tree was down on Freemont Street. In Attleboro at 206 PM, a tree was down on South Avenue at Tiffany Street. In Easton at 249 PM, a tree was down on Hillington Drive. In Mansfield at 409 PM, two trees were down on Route 106 east of the town center.
In Foxboro at 201 PM EDT, a tree and wires were down on Taylor Road. In Medway at 218 PM, a large tree and wires were down on Winthrop Street. In Franklin at 230 PM, a tree was down on Maple Street near Dean Field and a tree was down on Beaver Street. In Sharon at 526 PM, a tree was down on wires and onto a house, which caused a small fire on South Walpole Street.
At 236 PM EDT, a wind gust to 59 mph was reported at West Island in Fairhaven. That site had also recorded a gust to 58 mph at 224 PM and at 243 PM it measured sustained winds of 46 mph. In Dartmouth at 238 PM, a tree was reported down on Reed Road. In Freetown at 254 PM, a tree was down on wires on Adams Avenue. In New Bedford at 423 PM, a tree was down on power lines on Ridgewood Drive.
At 354 PM EDT, a mesonet station at Deer Island recorded sustained winds of 46 mph. Earlier, at 230 PM, in Boston, a tree was down on Cambridge Street. In Winthrop at 313 PM, a tree was down on Governors Drive. In Boston at 330 PM, a tree was down on wires on High Street and a tree was down on Arbor Way. At 545 PM in Brighton (Boston) a tree and wires were down on Larch Street.
In Townsend at 235 PM EDT, a large pine tree fell through the roof of a house on Todd Drive.
At 235 PM EDT, an amateur radio operator reported a gust to 60 mph at Hull. At 257 PM, a mesonet site at Scituate recorded sustained winds of 40 mph.
In Boxford at 251 PM EDT, a tree was down through the interior of a house on Forest Lane and trees were down on Mill Road. In Topsfield at 259 PM, a tree was down on Perkins Row. In West Newbury at 540 PM, a tree was down on River Meadow Drive.
At 247 PM EDT, the mesonet site at Children's Island measured both sustained winds of 46 mph and a gust to 59 mph. In Saugus at 252 PM EDT, a tree fell onto wires and a car on Great Woods Road. In Salem at 301 PM, a large tree was down on Highland Avenue and at 355 PM a tree and wires were down on Howard Street. In Danvers at 411 PM, a large tree was down on Hobart Street.
In Mattapoisett at 303 PM EDT, a tree was down onto power lines on Ocean Drive. Winds in the area were gusting to 50 to 60 mph.
At 316 PM EDT, the Blue Hill Observatory ASOS at 660 feet elevation in Milton recorded a sustained wind of 43 mph and at 403 PM it recorded a gust to 59 mph. At 335 PM EDT, an amateur radio operator recorded a gust to 60 mph in Milton. A spotter in North Weymouth reported gusts to 60 mph at 445 PM and 68 mph at 501 PM.
At 332 PM EDT in Cambridge, an amateur radio operator recorded a gust to 59 mph.
