High Wind Warning:
Issued at 820 AM MST for eastern Colorado and portions of
northwest Kansas, in effect until 8 PM MST this evening.
Winter Weather Advisory:
Graham, Sheridan, and Thomas counties are in the advisory again.
Otherwise, the winter weather forecast is on track and remains in
effect until 5 PM MST Sunday afternoon.
Today: Strong NW winds are expected on the western periphery of
the intensifying mid-latitude cyclone today, with maximum
sustained winds in the 30-40 mph range and gusts as high as 55-65
mph, particularly on the clear side of the gradient in cloud cover
in eastern CO and extreme western KS. Winds will begin to weaken
AOA sunset and will further weaken this evening. The latest
guidance continues to suggest that the developing deformation band
will largely miss the Tri-State area this afternoon and evening,
with the bulk of precipitation falling to the north/east in
central Nebraska.
A fairly homogeneous airmass is in place across the Tri-State
area this morning, with temperatures in the mid 30s and wetbulb
temperatures at or above freezing. With marginal thermodynamic
profiles and little/no advection, precipitation type will be
rate-driven in nature. Thus, precip may transition between
rain/snow multiple times, and accumulating snow will be limited
to areas that see persistent/moderate precipitation (i.e. north
and east of Goodland). In such a marginal thermodynamic
environment, expect wet snow characterized by low snow-to-liquid
equivalent ratios. The majority of precipitation anticipated in
assoc/w this system is expected to fall by midnight MST.
Tonight-Sunday Night: Winds will weaken this evening into tonight
as the mid-latitude cyclone matures and progresses northeast into
Iowa. Light snow will remain possible along and north of I-70
overnight into Sunday, however, precipitation amounts will be
on the order of a few hundredths of an inch, and very little in
the way of additional accumulation is anticipated. On Sunday,
expect mostly cloudy to overcast skies and a 15-20 mph northwest
breeze with highs in the 30s. Some clearing is anticipated Sunday
night as the occluded mid-latitude cyclone lifts rapidly ENE/NE
to the Great Lakes. With light winds and at least some clearing,
expect lows in the teens to lower 20s Monday morning.
.LONG TERM...(Monday through Friday)

Northwest flow aloft prevails into the extended period, with
troughing to the east of the High Plains and an upper ridge building
along the west coast. Dry weather is forecast Tuesday through
Thursday as the ridge gradually progresses towards the region. On
Thursday, a disturbance to the north flattens the ridge while a
short wave trough advances from the desert southwest to the southern
Plains. This disturbance currently generates chances for light snow
on Friday, mainly south of Interstate 70. Overall, the majority of
the precipitation produced by this wave is forecast to stay south of
the region. Will continue to monitor in the coming days.
High temperatures warm slightly into the 30s on Tuesday, and again
into the mid 30s to low 40s on Wednesday. However, an arctic front
should drop temperatures back into the upper 20s to mid 30s on
Thursday and Friday. Low temperatures generally remain in the teens.
