Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes developed within a Quasi-Linear Convective System that moved across the region during the late evening of November 30th and continued into the early morning of the 1st. The parent storm system intensified over the southern Plains and tracked northeast into northern Missouri.

The parent storm system intensified over the southern Plains and tracked northeast into northern Missouri. Widespread severe wind gusts between 60 and 80 mph, hail and isolated tornadoes occurred. Seven tornadoes were confirmed over southwest and south central Missouri. The tornadoes were rated EF-0 to EF-1 based on NWS Storm Surveys. Unfortunately, there was one fatality that occurred in Aurora, Missouri when a tornado struck a local motel.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Springfield MO 1046 PM CST Fri Nov 30 2018 .MESOSCALE DISCUSSION... Issued at 1027 PM CST Fri Nov 30 2018 The main focus over the next six hours will be a band of thunderstorms tracking out of eastern Kansas and Oklahoma. These storms are developing along and ahead of a surface trough as strong upper level energy tracks east across the central and southern Plains. We continue to believe that a combination of line segments and a few supercells will impact extreme southeastern Kansas and southern Missouri overnight. The greatest threat for severe storms will occur generally near and south of Highway 60 as a warm front lifts north into this region. While instability will remain somewhat limited, areas of far southern Missouri will likely see MLCAPE values approach 1000 J/kg south of that warm front. With strong low level wind shear in place, all modes of severe weather will remain possible across extreme southeastern Kansas and southern Missouri including the threat for isolated tornadoes given strong low level wind shear. && .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 151 PM CST Fri Nov 30 2018 Currently across the area, dense fog had cleared most locations by midday, but was still holding on at the West Plains observation site as of 2 pm. The dense fog areas are fairly localized right now. The clearing over some locations in the west have climb into the mid 60s. Some low 70s temperatures were in east central Oklahoma. Dewpoints were in the 50s. A special 18z soundings at SGF shows a large cap MU CINH (-93). Water vapor imagery shows the base of a negatively tilted trough shifting east over New Mexico early this afternoon. Surface low pressure was strengthening over the southern high plains. Our main focus in the short term will be with severe weather potential this evening and overnight. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday) Issued at 151 PM CST Fri Nov 30 2018 MU CAPE is progged to continue increasing from the southwest into the southwest portion of the CWA late this afternoon and evening with significant shear values over the entire CWA. CAPE is expected to remain elevated through most of the evening with a significant thermal cap in place. Elevated storms are expected to break out over the southwest portion of the CWA between 6 and 9 pm and rapidly spreading northeast across the remainder of the CWA during the evening. Because of the high deep layer shear and decent elevated CAPE, large hail and damaging straight line winds will be the primary severe weather risks. Forecast soundings do show the cap eroding and the potential for some surface based CAPE near the back edge of the expected convection, so there would be a very limited risk of an isolated tornado by late evening into the early part of the overnight hours over the southwest portion of the CWA. Have increased the winds over the area for both tonight and on Saturday as the strong low pressure system moves into and out of the area. The bulk of the precipitation will have moved out of the CWA by 12z Sat. The main area of precipitation with the surface low on Saturday should be north and northwest of the area. Temperatures on Saturday will be warmest in the east with generally steady or slowly falling temperatures during the day in the west. .LONG TERM...(Saturday Night through Friday) Issued at 151 PM CST Fri Nov 30 2018 The bigger push of cold air will not arrive until Sunday though and we should remain above freezing until Sunday night. Can't rule out a few flurries or light precipitation in our far northern counties Sunday night as upper energy pushes across the region, but nothing measurable is expected. The cold air will continue to dive south into the region with highs on Monday in the mid 30s to low 40s and lows monday night from the mid 20s to around 30. Even colder temperatures are expected by Tuesday night as the Canadian surface high pressure system moves closer to directly over the region and temperatures should dip into the teens to mid 20s. A recovery in temperatures is expected by the end of the week with the high pushing to the east. Potential fly in the ointment...ECMWF showing precipitation lifting back into the area late Thursday into Thursday night with the surface ridge to the east and more of a southwesterly flow aloft. GFS not showing any precipitation yet during this time frame, but will need this carefully as the cold air will be shallow at this time frame. For now we are carrying low end pops with rain/snow wording. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Saturday evening) Issued at 553 PM CST Fri Nov 30 2018 Showers and thunderstorms will overspread the region tonight with a few strong to severe storms expected. Ceilings and visibilities will generally vary between MVFR and IFR, but some patches of VFR will occur between storms. Low level wind shear conditions are expected tonight with surface winds also increasing and becoming gusty out of the southeast as a warm front lifts north through southern Missouri. A period of VFR is then expected from late tonight into Saturday morning before MVFR ceilings push back into the region by the afternoon. SRThe Springfield radar (KSGF), 86 km away, was scanning. The volume nearest the first event began at 05:57 UTC.
65 thunderstorm wind, 7 tornado. Local standard time, as filed.
Several trees were reported down with minor roof damage to a home.
A trained spotter estimated winds at 60 mph.
Several trees were blown down, some were blown onto some outbuildings causing minor damage.
Several utility poles were downed at the intersection of Highways 112 and 76.
An EF-0 tornado with maximum estimated wind speed of 80 mph and path width of 25-50 yards tracked 0.12 miles to the east-northeast before lifting west of Highway 37. Roof damage occurred to several homes along the path and damaged a large tree before lifting.
The Emergency Manager reported estimated thunderstorm winds of 60 mph.
Three homes were heavily damaged between Sans Souci drive and Carefree Lane when several large trees were blown over by strong straight line thunderstorm winds.
The Mesonet Station MO002, at Interstate 44 mile marker 1 near Joplin, measured a wind gust of 69 mph.
An EF-1 tornado developed just west of the water tower and tracked northeast to the Aurora Motel, where one fatality occurred. The tornado then tracked northward across Highway 60 and impacted Sutherlands before dissipating. Path length was near one half mile. Peak wind was estimated at 105 mph.
Severe thunderstorm wind gusts severely damaged a home just northeast of the confluence of the White and James rivers on Table Rock Lake. Wind speeds were estimated at 80 mph, which ripped a large chunk of a roof off of the home.

A 73 mph wind gust was measured on a Davis Weather Station in Branson Hills, 1.5 miles west of Highway 76.
A large tree was blown down. Roof damage occurred to a home where three plywood boards were removed from roof.

Several trees were uprooted, and some roof damage occurred to buildings in and around the city of Marionville from straight line thunderstorm winds.
Numerous trees were blown down. No structural damage occurred.
A large tree and a well house were destroyed. A car and roof of a home were damaged.
An EF-0 tornado touched down in the Christian County panhandle damaging numerous trees and a couple of outbuildings. One outbuilding was completely destroyed. The tornado was on the ground for roughly 2.08 miles south of Clever.
An EF-1 tornado developed approximately 2 miles south of Billings and tracked north-northeast and dissipated approximately 1 mile south of Billings. Numerous trees were uprooted and snapped with several homes and outbuildings sustaining minor roof damage.
Numerous tree limbs were reported down and tree debris was reported near Highway 60 and Washington Avenue.
A phone pole was blown down and partially over the road at West Dade 122 and North 115 in the Greenfield area.
Damage to the roof of an outbuilding/large shed occurred from thunderstorm winds.
An EF-1 tornado developed approximately 3 miles west of Republic and tracked northeast and dissipated within the city limits of Republic. Two large barns were destroyed and numerous trees were uprooted. Several homes sustained minor roof damage.
The Mesonet station F1021, 2 ENE of Lampe measured a 66 mph wind gust.
Thunderstorm winds rolled a camper multiple times into the wall of a home. Multiple outbuildings were also damaged.
A Large tree was blown down at the First Baptist Church and was partially blocking the road.
Several trees were reported down and shingle were blown of several homes.
Minor roof damage was reported to a home.
Roof damage occurred to the Meek's Building Supply Company.
Winds measured at 83 mph removed shingles from several homes.
A thunderstorm wind gust of 64 mph was reported.
The 911 Center reported that several power poles were down across West Bypass south of Sunshine Street, blocking portions of West Bypass.
A estimated wind gust of 60 mph was reported.
Two Walnut trees with 3-4 foot diameter were blown over. A chimney was also blown over onto a neighboring house.
Shingles were pulled off several homes and several mature trees were downed. A few of the trees were very large.
Several power poles were reported down across US 160 south of Sunshine Street.
A wind gust of 64 mph was measured by the County Emergency Manager.
A trained spotter reported 55 to 65 mph wind gusts near Oak Grove Street and East Commercial Street.
Shingle damage occurred to a roof and a section of fence was blown down near the 1500 block of South Quail Avenue.
Two large trees were uprooted.
A wind gust of 80 mph was measured by a Davis Vantage Pro2 weather station near Springfield Downtown Airport.
The ASOS station SGF, Springfield-Branson National Airport measured a 68 mph thunderstorm wind gust.
Several reports of power poles down in Springfield and numerous power outages occurred as 68 mph thunderstorm wind moved through the city.
Power lines were reported down.
The MESONET Station D5746, in Battlefield recorded a winds gust of 68 mph.
Several large branches in excess of 2 inches in diameter were reported down.
The Emergency Manager reported a measured 74 mph thunderstorm wind gust.
Several large trees were uprooted.
Power lines were reported down due to high winds.
Several power lines were down and power outages were reported.
A portion of a garage roof was peeled off and landed on a parked truck. Several trees were reported down or damaged.
Numerous trees were uprooted around town.
An EF-1 tornado formed 2 miles north northeast of Seymour and tracked northeast and dissipated approximately 6 miles northeast of Seymour. There was significant damage to barns along with uprooted trees along the tornadoes path.
Multiple large trees were downed east of State Road 95, mostly along County Road 347.
Multiple trees were reported down.
Power lines were reported down.
Numerous tree limbs were reported down on Highway 65 south of Buffalo.
A brief EF-0 tornado tracked for approximately one quarter of a mile and broke several large tree branches.
Multiple large tree limbs were downed and trash dumpsters displaced by high thunderstorm winds.
The fire department reported estimated 70 mph winds at Highway 76 and Highway EE. Several power outages were reported from downed lines and broken power poles.
The Fair Grove Police Department utility pole, with attached city infrastructure equipment, snapped in half at 70 East Willow Street.
Winds were estimated in excess of 60 mph in Norwood.
A semi truck was blown off Interstate 44 at mile marker 106.
A Missouri Ag Mesonet station measured thunderstorm winds of 61 mph.
The roof of a barn, located along State Highway N, was damaged.
Several large trees were downed at the Junction of US 60 and US 63.
Power lines and a large tree were reported down near Highway Y.
Tree limbs and power lines were reported down in town.
