Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 736 AM MDT Thu Jul 12 2018 .UPDATE...Early morning update to add some showers and potentially a thunderstorm, though instability is low, a strike has been found over the Southern Highlands. These showers and/or thunderstorms are expected to be confined south and east of I-15 / I-86 and track eastward this morning into the early afternoon with little to no accumulation. NP/JK && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 304 AM MDT Thu Jul 12 2018/ DISCUSSION...The hot and dry weather theme will continue through the next week with few exceptions. Dry westerly flow will persist through the remainder of this week, ensuring the continuation of those hot and dry conditions. As the weekend approaches, a sprawling, hot and strong High Pressure Ridge is forecast to take up residence over the Great Basin, with SE Idaho forecast to be nestled within its northern fringes. A trough of low pressure is then forecast to swing through the area on Saturday, of similar strength and with similar amounts of moisture availability (very little) to last Tuesday's trough passage. As a result, breezy conditions are expected to develop over the Weekend along with the risk for an isolated Shower or Thunderstorm, particularly late in the day Saturday. Precipitation amounts are expected to be very limited with this activity. By early next week, the strong and hot ridge of High Pressure over the Great Basin is expected to regain its territory, with SE Idaho once again forecast to reside on its northern fringes. This will mean a continuation of hot and dry weather. It may be worth noting that the deterministic ECMWF model develops an area of Low Pressure to our west and drifts that across SE Idaho Mon-Wed, developing widespread Shower and Thunderstorm activity in the process -- particularly on Tuesday. This particular solution was disregarded at this time as it is an outlier. AD/Valle AVIATION...VFR condition with relatively light winds through Friday. Valle FIRE WEATHER...Dry weather will persist into Saturday. There's a possibility of dry thunderstorms across the area Saturday. Winds will remain mainly light.
