Heavy snow was also noted in the western margin of the Columbia basin where low level cold air was trapped against the Cascades. The remainder of the Columbia Basin received 1 to 3 inches of snow from this system.

.SYNOPSIS...
Anticipate more wet and unsettled weather. Snow will persist in
the Cascades and Panhandle mountains with more accumulations
expected through Monday. Light rain will be found from the LC
Valley and the Palouse. A cold front will drop through the region
and bring another round of wintery weather. Most areas north of
Highway 2 will see heavy snow, meanwhile farther south expect
rain or a rain snow mix. A subtle drying and cooling trend is
expected through midweek, before a very wet system arrives by
Wednesday night into Thursday. Drier weather is forecast for the
end of the week.

.DISCUSSION...
Today and tonight...An upper level low pressure sitting just off
the coast will be the driver of our weather through the next 24 to
36 hours. Today dawns with a stationary front draped across the
region from about Ellensburg...to just south of Deer Park...and
east into the central Idaho mountains north of Mullan Pass. Waves
of moisture welling up from the southwest are also apparent on
satellite ready to enhance along this front into various forms of
precipitation across the region.
With the overall concept and forecast field of motion with the
latest models are actually in decent agreement. The stalled front
is expected to slump southward today to an orientation from about
Yakima to Mullan Pass by this afternoon...and then in response to
further digging of the offshore low start moving back north
tonight as a surface low develops over the basin tonight...leaving
the eastern basin in the warm sector of this developing low.
based on this scenario...reasonable confidence exists that the
Palouse and points southward will remain rain through today and
tonight...rain beginning again this morning and continuing into
the night with possibly some drying late tonight from the south to
north. Also confidence is fairly high that a mass of cold air
trapped against the Cascades will create mainly accumulating snow
late today and tonight as mid level flow switches from southwest
to southeast upslope into the Cascades. The Winter Weather
Advisory for the Cascades lee zones will need to be upgraded to a
Winter Storm Warning with the morning forecast...and the Moses
Lake area will need to join the Winter Weather Advisory raft for
smaller accumulations tonight as the warm front moves north.
The mountains north and east of the basin will continue to get
hammered...and it doesn't look like any warm air will make it into
the valleys either...so the existing Winter Storm Warnings still
look good for the mountain zones. Only the Central Panhandle
mountains may allow a change to rain in the valleys tonight as the
warm front passes through.
The Davenport to Spokane to Coeur D'Alene area will probably be
the messiest and most uncertain part of the forecast. More
accumulating snow is likely today and tonight. Rain is expected
this morning as the stalled front retrogrades back to the south
with current temperatures and dew points precluding significant
snow accumulations before this afternoon. This afternoon
however...and through much of tonight the area will be on the cold
side of the front with strong and moist isentropic ascent
creating a long period of snow...but the snow:water ratios will be
low enough...less than 10:1...probably in the 7 or 8:1 area given
how moist the boundary layer is...to limit accumulations to low
end Warning criteria...however this will be wet and heavy snow
tough to drive in for the Monday morning commute. There is also a
small chance of pockets of freezing rain late tonight as the warm
front claws back north. /Fugazzi
Monday: Moderate to heavy precipitation will be in the process of impacting
the North Idaho Panhandle and far NE Washington Monday morning as
a filling 990mb surface low clashes with a Canadian front
providing strong low-level convergence while a vigorous shortwave,
right jet entrance region, and ageostrophic divergence lead to
deep layer ascent. Confidence is high for heavy precipitation
given these factors yet we still carry some uncertainty exactly
how precipitation types will play out during the 4AM to 10Am time-
frame. Evening models are in better agreement that the rain/snow
line will make one last small push north through the Spokane-Cd'A
area setting up somewhere between Cocolalla...Diamond Lake...Deer
Park...Wellpinit...and toward Davenport with an additional 5-8
inches of snow possible from Sandpoint to Porthill and along the
Pend Oreille River Valley. Lighter amounts will extend into
Colville, Republic, and Oroville. Moderate snow will also be
falling in the Central Panhandle Mtns at locations like Lookout
Pass with snow levels hovering between 3000-4000 feet. As the low
lifts into N Idaho around midday, precipitation intensities will
be on the decline as cooler air floods in from the west. There may
be a switch back to snow across the Upper Columbia Basin, Ern WA,
and majority of N Idaho but accumulations initially look to be
light with minimal impacts.
By midday, precipitation processes become more showery and convective
driven by strong southwest winds ascending into the Idaho
Panhandle and Cascade Crest. Models generally agree on at least
one or two embedded vorticity maximums sliding through as well
which will renew snow showers chances into Ern WA and Columbia
Basin. Could see an inch or two from this activity but the main
threat for several inches of accumulations will be in the
aforementioned mountain zones.
Strong winds will develop in two locations as the low is tracking
through the region. We will be watching gusty N winds channeling
down the Okanogan Valley spilling into the Waterville Plateau.
These northerly could carry speeds of 10-25 mph with gusts to 35
mph...with speeds greatest early morning. The second area will be
south of the low across southeastern WA and the lower Idaho
Panhandle. These southwest winds will approach speeds of 15-25 mph
with the potential for gusts up to 45 mph Monday morning before
decreasing toward 35 mph Monday afternoon. The strongest speeds
look to impact the foothills of the Blue Mtns and Palouse. Rain
falling Sunday night and Monday morning should keep the threat for
blowing snow to a minimum in these lower elevations.
Light snow showers will continue in the mountains on Tuesday while a
majority of the Basin experiences a break in the precipitation.
Models are once again wavering with the northward extent of a
light precipitation event and warm front Tuesday night with
evening guidance keeping most snow south of my CWA. Given the
wavering over the last few days, opted to leave the forecast as is
but thinking we can trim back precipitation chances tomorrow if
models remain consistent.
Confidence continues to increase for a wet and mild storm system Wednesday
night into Thursday. GFS is still a bit slower with the onset of
the precipitation vs the EC but each suite is confirming
anomalously high moisture content and likelihood for 850mb temps
to surge near 5C over Spokane. The cold antecedent air mass will
allow snow to be the main precipitation type at the onset with
several inches possible before switching over to rain. May see a
wintry mix where cold air is more stubborn. /sb

12Z TAFS: A stationary front laying from KELN to KDEW to KMLP at
12Z will drop southward to KYKM to KMLP during the day today.
along this front waves of Pacific moisture will enhance into
precipitation mainly over the eastern TAF sites...as RA turning
to SN at the spokane area TAF sites and RA at KLWS and KPUW. KMWH
and KEAT will be in a partial rain shadow with only occasional -SN
today. Tonight the front will move back north as a warm front and
produce widespread precipitation. KPUW and KLWS will remain
rain...KGEG...KSFF and KCOE will be primarily -SN changing to a
RA/SN mix or RA by 12Z Monday. KMWH and KEAT will see -SN from
around 00Z through 12Z Monday. IFR conditions will be common and
prevalent at all TAF sites except KLWS and KPUW during these
