Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 326 PM PDT Thu May 25 2017 .SYNOPSIS....A weak shortwave trough will clip our area bringing temperatures down to season normals tomorrow and Saturday before warming back up to triple digits on Memorial Day. Winds are expected to be breezy to windy tonight and Friday for across the Mojave Desert. Slight chances for showers in northeast Lincoln County Friday and Saturday afternoon. && .SHORT TERM...tonight through Sunday night A shortwave trough is digging southward, currently positioned over the OR/ID border. Under the troughs influence temperatures have been slightly cooler this afternoon and will continue to hover around the seasonal average tomorrow as well before a warm up this weekend. Winds this evening will be breezy to windy across southern areas of the Mojave Desert. A Wind Advisory for western San Bernardino County is in effect until midnight tonight, with winds gusting up to 45 mph spreading across much of that area. Elsewhere, breezy to windy conditions are expected this evening and will pick up again Friday. Tonight and tomorrow isolated areas in Mohave County may reach wind gusts up to 40 mph, but have not issued a Wind Advisory for those areas due to the isolated nature. As the shortwave swings eastward Friday and Saturday it will clip northeast Lincoln County where a slight chance of afternoon showers and high based thunderstorms will be a possibility. After the influence of the trough has passed, strong ridging will build in behind it on Sunday and Monday. Temperatures will warm up quiet a bit underneath the ridge and will push temperatures back to triple digits across lower portions of the Mojave Desert. Winds will be light through the Memorial Day weekend. && .LONG TERM....Monday through Thursday. A ridge of high pressure will be centered over the area on Monday and provide mostly dry conditions and temperatures several degrees above their seasonal normals. An area of low pressure will form off the southern California coast Monday night into Tuesday. The exact track and strength of the low is still, but southeast to easterly flow around the low will act to bring an increase in moisture into the Mohave County on Tuesday. The operational GFS is quickest to eject the low and moisture to the east, on Wednesday, but is more of an outlier with the bulk of the guidance lingering the moisture into at least Wednesday. I maintained a slight chance of thunderstorms, particularly over the northwest plateau of Mohave County Tuesday through Thursday. Temperatures will remain above normal through the period with a couple of degrees of cooling expected by mid week. && .FIRE WEATHER...conditions will remain hot and dry. With gusty winds forecast to be around 35 MPH again this evening across Clark and Mohave counties, critical fire weather conditions are once again enhanced and a Red Flag Warning remains in effect to highlight the potential for rapid fire spread. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...winds are expected to stay out of the southwest to west direction through the evening gusting up to 25-30 kts until around midnight. Overnight a 10-18 kt wind will remain southwesterly with occasional gusts up to 25 kts. Tomorrow morning winds will lighten up around 14z-15z favoring a southerly direction, similar to this morning. Clear skies expected through the period. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...across the area wind directions will be west to southwest with wind speeds around 15-20 kts and gusts up to 30 kts throughout the evening. The exception being KDAG where winds will be westerly from 20-25 kts and gusting around 30-35 kts. Winds will become lighter overnight for most areas except Mohave County where an overnight southerly wind will be 15-20 kts. Slight chances for showers are possible in northeast Lincoln County.
