Widely scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms should persist over the higher terrain of eastern Arizona this weekend. && .UPDATE...There are no changes to the current forecast with the ridge building in over the next few day from the west. Thunder showers have already initiated along eastern Apache County as discussed in the previous forecast and are expected to continue through the afternoon in Apache and Navajo counties, especially in the White mountains. Temperatures will be about 5 degrees above normal across most of northern Arizona and 5 to 10 degrees above normal in the Grand Canyon around Supai and to the west. && .PREV DISCUSSION /600 AM MST/... A warm ridge of high pressure is building along the West coast today and has already brought dry and stable air into the western half of our state. This ridge to move ever so slowly across the desert southwest through the middle of next week. So most of the northland will be dry with daily max and min temps around 5 degrees above normal. Surface winds to be light and variable through Sunday morning, then become breezy from the SW during the afternoons through midweek. There is lingering moisture across Navajo and Apache counties today and widely scattered afternoon storms are expected, especially in the White Mountains. Mid level winds will be very weak through Sunday, and we left the slight chance of afternoon storms for the White Mtns in the forecast through Sunday. A few afternoon clouds should be expected along the Mogollon rim as well this weekend. && .AVIATION...For the 18Z package... Mainly VFR conditions will continue for the next 24 hours. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop 18Z-02Z, mainly east of a line from Payson to Kayenta. Gusty and erratic winds near storms, otherwise light wind today.
