What happened

The episode as NWS RLX wrote it up.

As a low pressure system moved up the Ohio River Valley, a secondary low developed across the Carolina Coast. The combination of these lows, brought widespread rain to the Central Appalachians on the 6th. With southeast surface winds, a wedge of cold air dammed up along the eastern slopes of the mountains, resulting in a period of freezing rain across Pocahontas County, and the higher elevations of Randolph County. The freezing rain started early in the morning, and tapered off by around 7:00 PM EST. Several isolated locations received up to a quarter inch of ice accretion by evening. Most communities received one to two tenths of an inch of ice.
