What happened

The episode as NWS OAX wrote it up.

A stationary boundary extended from western Iowa into central Kansas. This boundary became a warm front during the day retreating into eastern Nebraska by afternoon as a deep area of low pressure moved northeast toward the area. Thunderstorms developed early in the day as the warm and moist air began to return to the region, and these produced isolated occurrences of large hail. During the mid afternoon additional thunderstorms developed over eastern Kansas with an intense supercell lifting north into southeast Nebraska producing large damaging hail.
