A shortwave trough embedded in strong westerly flow aloft, combined with a tight horizontal surface pressure gradient accompanying a lee surface trough east of the Alberta and Montana Rockies, created a favorable environment for strong and gusty winds along Montana's Rocky Mountain Front and over the plains immediately east of the mountains. In addition, strong southerly winds impacted the Madison Valley as airflow funneled through the valley.
