.SYNOPSIS...
Backdoor cold front will reduce temperatures some across eastern
Massachusetts, but it will remain very hot and humid the rest of the
region. Nearly all of southern New England will be very hot and
humid on Sunday. Scattered mainly afternoon/early evening thunderstorms
are expected through Sunday. A break in the heat and showers will
occur Monday into Tuesday before another system approaches the
region by Wednesday into Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
215 PM Update...The back door front has lifted back to the north
and east this afternoon. It stretches from about Fitzwilliam NH
through Gardner MA to Charlton MA to Foxboro MA and then to Bourne
MA. Temperature and dewpoint differences between the sides of the
front still remain impressive. Heat indices on the hot side of the
front reach up to 111 in Hartford, but are mainly in the 100 to
108 range. While temperatures on the cold side of the front are in
the low to mid 70s.
In other news, showers and thunderstorms have developed across the
CT valley with a few isolated showers/storms across the remainder
of the area. These will be hit and miss storms once again. A
couple of limiting factors are a lack of upper level support and
warmer air aloft (cap) keeping storms from developing until later
on in the afternoon/evening. These storms developing over the area
now indicate we've broken the cap...at least in a few locations.
There remains little in the way of upper level support. However,
there are also several things that will keep storms going. Those
are plenty of instability and moisture. Especially on the warm
side of the front. SPC mesoanalysis shows 2000-3500 J/kg of SBCAPE
across the warm side of the front with very little across NE MA.
In addition, PWATs are well over 2 inches which is 2-3 STD above
normal for mid August.
All that to say, could severe weather occur? Yes. Is that the
greatest threat? No. We could certainly see some isolated pockets
of wind damage but the larger threat is definitely heavy rain and
urban and poor drainage flooding. In the stronger storms or any
that are slow moving or stationary, flash flooding is something to
consider. In yesterday's storms, several locations received
upwards of 3-4 inches of rain in an hour.
Lastly, the presence of the back door front and low LCLs raises
at least a small risk of one or two cells obtaining a significant
low level spin and possibly a very brief, short tornado. This
possibility is really quite low, but nonetheless these are the
type of antecedent conditions we have seen in a few past cases.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
Tonight...Expect showers and thunderstorms to gradually diminish
during the evening with patchy fog developing over the interior
valleys and somewhat more widespread low clouds and areas of fog
along the south coast. Fog will be more likely across any areas that
receive rain. It should be another night of high minimums, possibly
again near record values.
Sunday...The backdoor cold front retreats to the northeast, and
nearly all of the forecast area will be subject to very high heat
and humidity with Heat Advisories or Excessive Heat Warnings
possibly being needed again. Thus, whereas the Boston area will be a
little cooler today, the high end heat/humidity returns Sunday.
Believe that convection may be a little more robust than suggested
by the numerical prediction model output. There is considerable
moisture and instability as we've seen the past few days, and a
weak low level frontal boundary may attempt to sag south late in
the day. Heavy downpours and a threat of localized flash flooding
remains a threat with precipitable waters a little above 2 inches.
Also, believe we may catch more of a plume of moisture with a Gulf
Coast orgin on Sunday. In addition, anticipate greater vertical
wind shear than we've seen the past few days and believe there
could be a severe risk. SPC has all of southern New England in a
marginal category. Any strong/severe thunderstorms Sunday
afternoon could also impact the coastal waters. There looks to be
a little drier air filtering from north to south late in the day.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
HIGHLIGHTS...

OVERVIEW...
The 00z guidance is overall in agreement through the period. Bermuda
high over the Mid-Atlantic will continue to pump in tropical
moisture into the region through at least Wed/Thurs. Both 700mb and
500 mb heights continue to remain 2-3 STD above normal over the Mid-
Atlantic which increases confidence that zonal/southwest flow will
remain over the area. Sunday night fropa will move just offshore by
Monday. There is the potential for another wave moving through the
flow during the mid-week bringing a chance for
showers/thunderstorms. Guidance and ensembles show that this will
occur late Tuesday into Wednesday as mid-level ridge will keep
Monday into early Tuesday mostly dry. 850 mb temps are about 1-2 STD
above normal during the period, so have trended temps near or above
normal Wed into Friday. Appears that Bermuda high will begin to
break down by next Friday which could bring northwest flow aloft and
dry air into the region.
DETAILS...
Monday into Tuesday...High confidence.
Guidance continues to show weak fropa will stall south of the region
last Sunday into Monday morning. This will allow for a break in the
heat and humidity to a point. 850mb Temps are still near 15-17 C
which could result in surface high temps in the upper 80s to low 90s
on Monday with mid 80s on Tuesday. Still some mugginess in the air
but it will bring some relief compared to the past couple of days.
Mid-level ridge will be over the area as surface high pressure
builds into SNE. This will limit any thunderstorm activity, but
still cannot rule out the potential for a stray shower along a sea
breeze boundary. High pressure will begin to shift back southward on
Tuesday which could allow for a round of showers and thunderstorms
across the western half of the region as the next system approaches
SNE.
Wednesday and Thursday...Moderate Confidence.
Zonal flow continues aloft as another shortwave and its associated
low pressure system approaches the area. This could bring another
round of showers and thunderstorms. Warm front will approach the
region late Tuesday into Wednesday morning. This will put southern
New England back in a warm/humid airmass. Associated cold front
appears to move through by Wednesday evening/Thursday AM bringing
more precip to the region. Still some uncertainty in the timing esp
with the building high over the Mid-Atlantic which could stall
precip timing. This system will also tap into the Gulf moisture
which will keep pooling into the area. Could see another round of
heavy rain as PWAT values are 2-3 STD above normal. Still plenty of
details to work out.
Thursday and beyond...Low confidence.
Cold frontal passage late Wednesday or Thursday followed by a
secondary cold front on Thursday. This front could bring in dry air
and lower humidity levels by the weekend as Canada high pressure
moves overhead.

back out to the north. Expect slow improvement to VFR here.
Elsewhere, mainly VFR conditions exist, though scattered showers
and thunderstorms will result in brief MVFR/IFR conditions at
times. Main threat with these storms will be heavy rain.
Tonight...Moderate confidence. Widespread low clouds and fog along
the coasts will result in areas of MVFR/IFR conditions. Elsewhere,
mainly VFR with pockets of IFR conditions in locally patchy fog.
Sunday...Moderate confidence. MVFR/IFR cigs/vsbys from stratus and
fog will gradually lift. Showers and thunderstorms, a few
possibly with strong wind gusts, will likely develop during the
afternoon resulting in brief periods of MVFR/IFR conditions.
Otherwise, VFR.
KBOS TAF...Moderate confidence in TAF. Timing of improvement to
VFR is low confidence. Could be a couple hours earlier than
forecast.
KBDL TAF...High confidence. Generally VFR conditions expected
except for patchy late night fog. Scattered afternoon/early
evening thunderstorms anticipate for both today and Sunday.
Outlook /Sunday Night through Thursday/...
High confidence in trends but some uncertainty in timing. Cigs and
vsbys restrictions Sunday night will improve with VFR into Tuesday
morning. Another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms late

for the outer south coast waters where a 5 foot swell lingers but
slowly subsiding. Winds and seas should be below Small Craft
Advisory threshold the rest of today through Sunday. Areas of fog
with visibilities 1 to 3 miles early this morning and again late
tonight/early Sunday morning. Isolated thunderstorms are possible
late this afternoon or early evening and a somewhat higher chance of
thunderstorms over the waters late Sunday afternoon. A few of the
thunderstorm late Sunday afternoon could have strong wind gusts.
Outlook /Sunday Night through Thursday/...
High confidence in trends with moderate confidence on exact timing.
High pressure building over the waters will result in seas below 5
feet and sea breeze development Monday and Tuesday. Southerly flow
will return Wednesday building heights and increasing winds as
another round of showers and thunderstorms moves over the water.
