A fast-moving upper level storm system shifted southeast out of Colorado into the southern Rockies of New Mexico. Widespread windy west winds over much of the region turned northwest throughout the day as cold air advanced into the area. The strongest wind gusts were found in the area from Albuquerque south and east to Clines Corners and Chaves County. A deep fetch of cold, moist, and unstable air behind the trough produced heavy snowfall over portions of the northern high terrain. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains were particularly hard hit. A band of snow developed over Taos County and repeatedly impacted the area from near Taos to Tres Ritos, Santa Fe Ski Basin, Gascon, and even onto the Interstate 25 corridor from Raton to Las Vegas. Upwards of 6 to 13 inches of snow was reported, particularly in the higher elevation areas. Widespread difficult travel conditions were reported across the region.
