Over the higher terrain precipitation started briefly as snow and sleet during the late evening of the 16th before changing to freezing rain early on the 17th.

A moist onshore and upslope flow along a developing coastal front produced an icy mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain over the higher terrain mainly in the northern half of Sussex County overnight on the 16th. Over the higher terrain precipitation started briefly as snow and sleet during the late evening of the 16th before changing to freezing rain early on the 17th. In the valleys precipitation was plain rain. In the higher terrain, the precipitation slowly changed to rain as warmer air moved into the county and the freezing rain was over by the middle of the morning on the 17th. Ice accumulations averaged less than one-tenth of an inch and mostly was reported on exposed surfaces: vehicles, decks and railings. Snow and sleet accumulations were less than one quarter of an inch.
