An early season snowfall blanketed southeast Missouri. Snowfall amounts ranged from one to three inches across most areas except for Scott County. In Scott County, snowfall reports averaged four to five inches. A weak low pressure system developed over the northern Gulf of Mexico, then moved northeast into Alabama. This system threw moisture northward into unseasonably cold air over southeast Missouri, resulting in widespread snow. Specific snowfall amounts included 5 inches near Scott City (Scott County), 3.5 inches near Poplar Bluff (Butler County), 3 inches at Doniphan (Ripley County), one inch at Cape Girardeau (Cape Girardeau County), and one inch at Marble Hill (Bollinger County). The snow fell at temperatures right near freezing on relatively warm pavement. The highest accumulations were on grassy areas. Roads were slush-covered and slippery during the period of heaviest snow.
