What happened

The episode as NWS PAH wrote it up.

A cold front moved southeast toward the Ohio Valley during the afternoon. Clusters of thunderstorms formed within a weak pre-frontal trough extending from northeast Kentucky southwestward across west central Kentucky. A cluster of storms over the Pennyrile region of western Kentucky strengthened as it interacted with a more moist and unstable boundary layer. The storms were embedded within a band of strong westerlies aloft, with deep-layer bulk wind shear values of 40 to 50 knots. Some of the storms produced large hail.
