A large, but quickly moving area of precipitation in the form of freezing rain, sleet and snow, quickly moved from northern Iowa, into far southern Minnesota by 9 am Sunday morning, January 27th. Initially, heavy sleet occurred along the Iowa border, but as it moved northward into cooler air, the precipitation was in the form of snow and sleet. By noon, most of the precipitation ended in far southern Minnesota, where up to a half inch of ice and sleet occurred near Albert Lea, with amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch from Albert Lea, northeast to Blooming Prairie and Bixby in southeast Steele County.
As the precipitation moved into the Twin Cities metro area, and areas north of the cities, most of the precipitation turned quickly into snow, with a short period of heavy snowfall during the afternoon.
Most of the accumulating snowfall ended by sunset, but lingering light snow and freezing drizzle occurred in portions of east central Minnesota through midnight.
