A very strong area of deepening low pressure moved east across northern Ohio during the evening hours of May 7th. By midday on the 8th, the low had reached northern New York state. Showers and thunderstorms associated with the low moved across northern Ohio during the evening hours of the 7th. Several of the thunderstorms became severe and at least one tornado was reported. An EF1 tornado moved across portions of eastern Wood County damaging a few homes and buildings. A downburst caused considerable damage in Erie County. There were dozens of reports of large hail and damaging winds elsewhere across northern Ohio. Estimates have indicated that as many as 5,000 homes and businesses in northern Ohio may have sustained damage during this event. At the peak of the storm more than 300,000 residents were without power in Northeast Ohio alone. A strong cold front trailing the low exited Ohio to the east early on May 8th. Gusty southwest to west winds occurred behind this front. Some wind damage was reported in a few northern Ohio counties during the early afternoon hours of the 8th.

Thunderstorm winds estimated to be at least 60 mph downed many trees and power lines in Providence and Waterville Townships. Downed trees blocked at least one road in Waterville. A couple buildings in the area also sustained minor damage.
Golf ball sized hail was observed. A few vehicles were damaged.
Thunderstorm downburst winds estimated to be at least 60 mph caused damage throughout northern Wood County. Damage was reported from the Grand Rapids area northeast across Perrysburg Township to near Millbury in the northeast corner of the county. Several barns and outbuildings were damaged in the Dowling area and a mobile home in Millbury was heavily damaged. Several homes south of Perrysburg sustained damage from fallen trees. At least one home in Rossford also sustained damage. Hundreds of trees and limbs along with a few utility poles were downed across northern Wood County. Scattered power outages were reported.

Thunderstorm downburst winds estimated to be in excess of 60 mph caused extensive damage in extreme eastern Lucas County. Several dozen trees were downed near Bono and Reno Beach in Jerusalem Township. Several camper trailers were overturned at a marina along Lake Erie. A large billboard sign was also damaged.

An EF1 tornado touched downed in rural Wood County near the intersection of Portage and Emerson Roads in Montgomery Township. The tornado traveled north northeast approximately two and a half miles before lifting near the intersection of Kenner Road and U.S. Route 6 near New Rochester. Five barns were leveled along the damage path which had a maximum width of around 100 yards. Several homes along the damage path also sustained roof damage. Two grain bins were also destroyed. Many trees and limbs were downed along the damage path.

A thunderstorm downburst with estimated peak wind gusts of between 70 and 80 mph caused extensive damage in western Erie County. The downburst damage path began southwest of Sandusky along Homegardner Road where a barn was damaged and many trees toppled. The damage path continued northeast across State Routes 2 and 101 and through the City of Sandusky. The damage path ended at the Lake Erie shoreline and was approximately seven miles in length. The most concentrated damage was along State Route 101 between State Route 2 and the Sandusky city limits. Many trees and tree limbs were downed in this area along with 13 utility poles. A few homes and buildings sustained roof damage in this area as well. Damage in the City of Sandusky was sporadic and consisted mainly of downed trees and limbs. Widespread power outages were reported in the area with at least 10,000 people loosing power. Fourteen people were stranded at a restaurant and gas station on the southwest side of Sandusky for seven hours because access was blocked by downed power lines.

A thunderstorm downburst with peak winds estimated to be as much as 75 mph did extensive damage in Cleveland's western suburbs. Hundreds, if not thousands of trees were toppled in Bay Village, Rocky River and Lakewood. The damage was most concentrated near the Lake Erie shoreline. Lakewood was the hardest hit of the communities with hundreds of trees down in the northwest corner of the city alone. At least 15 intersections in the city had to be closed because of downed trees and power lines. Fallen trees damaged more than a 130 homes in Lakewood alone. Damage in Lakewood topped $4 million. Additional homes and buildings were damaged in Rocky River and the eastern portion of Bay Village. Dozens of automobiles were also damaged by the downburst. According to estimates, as many 200,000 people may have lost power during this event. It took over two days for power to be restored to all areas.
