A fire in the Jackson Swamp area burned 180 acres and forced the evacuation of homes along Marsh Road. The fire was contained before homes were damaged but the fire continued to burn for several weeks, mainly underground as a result of the organic soils in the area. The fire flared up in subsequent strong wind events, growing to at least 800 acres. Dense nighttime smoke forced the closure of NC Hwy 41 on multiple occasions through the month.
