Winter Storm in Pennsylvania, January 22 to 23, 2005

Low pressure, located over the upper Midwest on Friday evening January 21st , tracked east into central Pennsylvania by midday Saturday, January 22nd. This storm then weakened, while a new low rapidly developed along the Delmarva Coast Saturday evening, and then tracked northeast to just east of Long Island by Sunday morning, January 23rd. As the low tracked across central Pennsylvania, a burst of moderate to locally heavy snow produced several inches of snow from late Saturday morning into early Saturday afternoon, with amounts ranging from 2 to 5 inches across the central mountains, and 5 to 7 inches across the Laurel Highlands, portions of Warren and McKean Counties, as well as across portions of York County.Another period of moderate snow occurred later Saturday night into early Sunday morning as Atlantic moisture wrapped around the western periphery of the developing coastal storm. Total snowfall amounts from the storm by early Sunday morning ranged from 5 to 7 inches across the central mountains, with higher amounts of 7 to 10 inches across portions of the north central mountains, the upper Susquehanna Valley, and across the Laurel Highlands.
