A strong low pressure system and associated occluded front over the northern Gulf of Alaska moved north resulting in a significant pressure gradient over the Alaska Range. This gradient, coupled with the channeling affects in the narrow passes of the mountains resulted in very strong winds in these channeled areas.
Deaths and injuries are direct and indirect together, as the offices filed them. Damage is property and crops in the dollars of the year, not adjusted for inflation, and only where an office estimated it.
The episode as NWS AFG wrote it up.
A strong low pressure system and associated occluded front over the northern Gulf of Alaska moved north resulting in a significant pressure gradient over the Alaska Range. This gradient, coupled with the channeling affects in the narrow passes of the mountains resulted in very strong winds in these channeled areas. Wind gusts to 67mph were recorded by the weather observer in Healy with gusts estimated up to up 63 mph along the eastern slopes of the Alaska Range.
