A cold west to east wind down the length of Lake Ontario brought lake effect snow into central and northern Oneida County. The lake effect band of snow moved south into the county during the afternoon of the 10th. The band remained nearly stationary the night of the 10th into the 11th from Camden to Holland Patent. The band of snow lifted back north as it diminished in intensity late morning to early afternoon on the 11th. Snowfall totals in central and northern Oneida County were 6 to 12 inches. Most locations south of Oneida Lake and the New York state thruway had less than 6 inches.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BINGHAMTON NY 945 AM EST SUN MAR 10 2002 RELATIVELY MINOR CHANGES WILL BE MADE TO THE FORECAST IN THE INITIAL PERIOD. LAKE EFFECT SNOW MACHINE HAS KICKED INTO GEAR OWING TO STRONG COLD ADVECTION AND LINGERING MOISTURE. IN THE NEAR TERM, THE MAIN EFFECTS IN OUR REGION WILL COME FROM AN EXTENDED LAKE ERIE BAND MIGRATING SOUTHWARD THROUGH OUR NORTHERN STRIPE OF ZONES. WE EXPECT A FAIRLY BRIEF PERIOD OF HEAVIER SNOW LATE THIS MORNING OVER PARTS OF THE FINGER LAKES AND MOHAWK VALLEY REGIONS, WITH THE BAND THEN SETTLING FROM NORTHERN STEUBEN COUNTY TO NEAR ITHACA AND ACROSS THE NORTHERN SUSQUEHANNA REGION THIS AFTERNOON. BY THIS TIME, THOUGH, IT MAY BE IN A WEAKENED STATE AS DIURNAL EFFECTS TAKE THEIR TOLL. AT ANY RATE, WELL BUMP UP THE PROBABILITIES OF SNOW SHOWERS INTO THE LIKELY RANGE TODAY FOR ROUGHLY THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE FORECAST AREA AND ADD SOME MINOR ACCUMULATIONS (1-2). AS FAR AS LAKE ONTARIO IS CONCERNED, THIS BAND THAT IS AFFECTING THE EASTERN LAKE ONTARIO AND TUG HILL REGIONS THIS MORNING IS STILL EXPECTED TO DROP SOUTH INTO NORTHERN ONEIDA COUNTY BY EARLY TO MID AFTERNOON. THE PRESENT ADVISORY WILL STAY IN TACT. CURRENT MESOSCALE MODEL DATA AND HOURLY SOUNDING PROGS SUGGEST THAT THIS BAND COULD STAY ACROSS NORTHERN ONEIDA AND REMAIN FAIRLY INTENSE FOR AT LEAST THE FIRST PART OF TONIGHT. WELL TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THAT POTENTIAL THIS AFTERNOON. OTHERWISE, THE WIND ADVISORY WILL STAY UP FOR THE REST OF TODAY. GUSTS OF 45+ MPH STILL QUITE POSSIBLE GIVEN TIGHT PRESSURE GRADIENT AND THE POSSIBILITY OF CONVECTIVE MIXING WITH SNOW SHOWERS THIS AFTERNOON.
