AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MOBILE AL 300 PM CDT FRI JUL 12 2002 THE MAIN FORECAST ISSUE FOR THE NEAR TERM WILL BE THE MOVEMENT OF A WEAK SURFACE LOW STILL WALLOWING IN THE NORTH CENTAL GULF OF MEXICO. WINDS OVER SOUTH CENTRAL ALABAMA ARE OUT OF THE NORTHEAST WITH MOSTLY LIGHT AND VARIABLE ELSEWHERE. SATELLITE AND RADAR IMAGERY SHOWS THAT MOST OF THE CONVECTION AROUND THE LOW REMAINS ALONG ITS SOUTHERN EDGE OVER THE CENTRAL GULF...WITH SOME SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WRAPPING AROUND THE EAST SIDE INTO THE EASTERN FLORIDA PANHANDLE. THE BEST RAIN CHANCES FOR THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT WILL BE OVER THE PANHANDLE ZONES...BUT WILL KEEP ONLY SCATTERED RAIN CHANCES IN. THE OTHER BIG WEATHER MAKER IS A STRONG SHORT WAVE TROUGH MOVING THROUGH THE MID MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AROUND THE BASE OF AND UPPER LEVEL TROUGH. THIS WILL BECOME THE DOMINANT FEATURE THROUGH THE WEEKEND AS WINDS SHIFT MORE TO THE SOUTHWEST AS THE TROUGH SAGS SOUTHEAST AND THE GULF LOW SHEARS INTO THE NORTHWEST FLORIDA COAST.
