SOUTH CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST COLORADO AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PUEBLO COLORADO
300 PM MDT SUN JUL 28 2002

EXTENT OF PRECIP TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT THE CONCERN.

CURRENTLY...ISOLATED HIGH BASED STORMS MOVING ACROSS THE MTNS AND
ADJACENT PLAINS...QUICK LOOK OUT THE WINDOW HERE IN PUEBLO SUGGESTS
MORE VIRGA THAN RAIN. COLD FRONT IS CURRENTLY MOVING ACROSS THE
EASTERN PLAINS...WITH GREATER INSTABILITY OVER THE FAR SOUTHEAST
CORNER AND AN ISOLATED STRONG TSRA SOUTH OF KSPD.

TONIGHT...WILL MAINTAIN ISOLATED TSRA MOST ZONES AT LEAST INTO THE
EVENING...EXPECTING ACTIVITY TO DIE QUICKLY OVER THE MTNS AND WEST
WITH WEAK FORCING AND LIMITED MOISTURE. STORMS MIGHT HANG ON A
LITTLE LONGER OVER THE PLAINS...ESPECIALLY FAR SE AS DEEPER MOISTURE
ADVECTS WWRD BEHIND THE COLD FRONT.

MONDAY...THOUGH MODELS SHOW LITTLE IN THE WAY OF PRECIP...THEY DO
PROG HIGH CAPES (1000-2000 J/KG) OVER THE PLAINS BY AFTERNOON.
WITH WEAK UPSLOPE FLOW...STILL SUSPECT ANY STORMS THAT DEVELOP OVER
THE EASTERN MTNS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO SUSTAIN THEMSELVES AS THEY
MOVE INTO THE UNSTABLE AIR OVER THE PLAINS. FARTHER WEST...WAS
TEMPTED TO REMOVE PRECIP ENTIRELY...BUT SINCE ISOLATED TSRA HAVE
FORMED THIS AFTERNOON...SUSPECT WELL SEE A REPEAT ON MON...
THOUGH AS AIRMASS DRIES SLIGHTLY...DOUBT WELL SEE ANY MEASURABLE
PRECIP. MAX TEMPS COOL A MINOR AMOUNT OVER THE EAST...WITH LITTLE
CHANGE OUT WEST.

TUE-WED...RATHER GENERIC SUMMERTIME FORECAST WILL CONTINUE...WITH
HOT DAYS AND SLIGHT CHANCES FOR AFTERNOON AND EVENING CONVECTION.
MODELS DONT SHOW MUCH IN THE WAY OF INCREASING MOISTURE...SO
SPARSE COVERAGE OF MOSTLY DRY THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE THE RULE.
MAX TEMPS CLIMB BACK TO SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL READINGS...WITH MID
AND UPPER 90S RETURNING TO THE LOWER ARK VALLEY.

THU-SUN...GFS TRIES TO DRAG A STRONGER COLD FRONT INTO NERN CO
THURSDAY MORNING...THEN THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE EAST BY
FRIDAY...WHILE 12Z AVN IS NOW A DAY SLOWER. BOTH RUNS HINT AT A
TEMPORARY EASTWARD MIGRATION OF THE UPPER RIDGE...THOUGH RUN TO RUN
TREND HAS BEEN NOTICEABLY LESS AGGRESSIVE WITH THE EASTWARD MOTION.
IF MODELS ARE RIGHT...THIS WOULD APPEAR TO OPEN THE DOOR FOR DEEPER
MOISTURE TO FLOW NORTHWARD INTO THE AREA OVER THE WEEKEND....WITH
MOIST SERLY UPSLOPE OVER THE PLAINS AS WELL. HAVE SEEN THIS PATTERN
IN MODEL LAND A FEW TIMES THIS SUMMER...BUT IT HAS BEEN MOSTLY ABSENT
HERE IN THE REAL WORLD. CURRENT GRIDS WITH JUST SLIGHT CHANCES WILL
BE FINE FOR NOW.
