EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN DIEGO CA
230 PM PDT TUE JUN 4 2002

.SYNOPSIS...BUILDING HIGH PRESSURE WILL BRING WARMING WITH NEAR RECORD
HIGH TEMPERATURES INLAND WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. A SHALLOW MARINE LAYER
WILL CAUSE AREAS OF LOW CLOUDS AND FOG NEAR THE COAST. COOLER TOWARD THE
END OF THE WEEK INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK AS THE HIGH WEAKENS.

.DISCUSSION...THERE WERE AREAS OF LOW CLOUDS/FOG INTO COASTAL ZONES THIS
AM...OTHERWISE CLEAR. 12Z NKX SOUNDING HAD A STRONG INVERSION BASED NEAR
1500 FT...OVER 2000 FT LOWER THAN 24 HOURS PREVIOUS. WEAK NE WINDS
AROUND 10 KFT AND STRONGER NLY WINDS ALOFT. OFFSHORE GRADIENT TRENDS BUT
STILL ONSHORE TO THE E WITH ABOUT 4 MB SAN-IPL.

UPPER RIDGE WILL BUILD OVER THE W THROUGH WED. RIDGE GETS FLATTENED BY
TROUGH MOVING PAST FAR TO THE N THU...BUT LITTLE CHANGE LOCALLY. WEAK NE
TO E WINDS ALOFT THROUGH THU WHICH COULD LOCALLY FILTER TO THE SURFACE.
NET RESULT IS WARMING IN ALL AREAS...ESPECIALLY INLAND/MOUNTAINS/
DESERTS. SEA BREEZE TO DEVELOPING DESERT THERMAL LOW WILL MODERATE TEMPS
NEAR THE COAST. LOW CLOUDS/DENSE FOG CONFINED TO NEAR THE COAST UNDER A
STRONG/SHALLOW INVERSION AND SOME FOG COULD LINGERING INTO THE AFTERNOON
AT THE BEACHES. NEAR RECORD MAX TEMPS WED IN THE INLAND AREAS AND
MOUNTAINS BUT DESERT RECORDS A BIT OUT OF REACH. NOT MUCH TEMP CHANGE
THU FOR ANOTHER CHANCE AT BREAKING SOME RECORDS...EVEN THROUGH SOME OF
THE RECORDS ARE HIGHER ON THU. COOLER FRI AS THE HI WEAKENS.

LONGER RANGE PROGS INDICATE UPPER TROUGH MOVING OFF TO THE E WITH RIDGE
BUILDING OFF THE COAST. GENERALLY WEAK CYCLONIC FLOW THROUGH MOST OF THE
EXTENDED PERIOD FOR COOLING TREND AND SOME INCREASE IN MARINE LAYER.

.SAN...NONE.
