EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN DIEGO CA 210 PM PDT WED JUL 17 2002 .SYNOPSIS...THE MONSOON FLOW WILL COME TO AN END TONIGHT AS A LOW PRESSURE TROUGH BECOMES ESTABLISHED OFF THE CALIFORNIA COAST. THIS TROUGH WILL RESULT IN SLIGHTLY COOLER WEATHER AND LOWER HUMIDITIES...AND WILL ALSO DEEPEN THE MARINE LAYER FOR MORE EXTENSIVE NIGHT AND MORNING CLOUDS WEST OF THE MOUNTAINS. THIS TROUGH WILL WEAKEN SATURDAY AND SUNDAY...AND HIGH PRESSURE REBUILDING OVER THE SOUTHWEST WILL BRING A WARMING TREND EARLY NEXT WEEK. .DISCUSSION...THE DRY AIR INTRUSION HAS BEGUN. DEWPOINTS ARE AVERAGING 5 DEGREES LOWER THAN 24 HOURS AGO IN THE SAN DIEGO AND RIVERSIDE COUNTY MTNS WHERE CONVECTION WAS LIMITED TO AFTERNOON CU TODAY. MOISTURE LINGERED A LITTLE LONGER IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY WHERE THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPED OVER BIG BEAR AND MOVED NORTH OVER THE LUCERNE VALLEY IN THE HIGH DESERTS. THIS ACTIVITY HAS MOVED NORTH TOWARD BARSTOW AND REDEVELOPMENT HAS BEEN MINIMAL OVER THE SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY MTNS SINCE 20Z. DRY SOUTHWEST FLOW AHEAD OF A WEST COAST TROF WILL BE THE DOMINATE WEATHER FEATURE THROUGH THE REST OF THE WEEK. THIS PATTERN TYPICALLY PRODUCES A DEEPER MARINE LAYER AND MORE EXTENSIVE NIGHT AND MORNING CLOUDS WEST OF THE MOUNTAINS...WITH LOW HUMIDITIES AND SLIGHTLY COOLER WEATHER ABOVE THE MARINE LAYER IN THE MTNS AND DESERTS. IN THE EXTENDED...THE MRF AND UK MODELS FORECAST AN UPPER RIDGE TO REBUILD OVER THE DESERT SOUTHWEST EARLY NEXT WEEK WHICH WOULD BRING HOT WEATHER BACK TO THE REGION. THE CANADIAN MODEL DIFFERS BY KEEPING A WEAK TROF JUST OFF THE COAST OF SOCAL...AND THE ECMWF TAKES THE MIDDLE ROAD.
