Area forecast discussion, Aug 3, 8:00 AM PST, 6 hours 8 minutes before
INTERIOR CENTRAL CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY - HANFORD CA
900 AM PDT SAT AUG 3 2002

SHORT WAVE TROUGH AXIS WILL BE MAKING A RUN FOR THE CENTRAL COAST
TODAY...WITH VORT CENTER MOVING INTO OUR DISTRICT LATE AFTN/EVE.
ONE FORECAST CONCERN FOR TODAY WILL BE THE THREAT OF CONVECTION NEAR
THE CREST IN THE NORTH. DESPITE THE INCREASING SW FLOW ALOFT PROGS
ARE STILL SHOWING JUST ENOUGH INSTABILITY AND MSTR...PLUS INCREASING
PVA...TO SUPPORT A SLGT CHANCE NEAR YOSEMITE. GIVEN THAT A FEW CELLS
MANAGED TO POP LATE FRI AFTN RIGHT ALONG THE CREST NEAR YOSEMITE AND
ONE ON THE TULARE CREST WILL GO AHEAD AND UPDATE FCST FOR A SLGT CHC
TSTMS MAINLY NORTH OF KINGS CYN.

THE FIRST VSBL SATPIX OF THE DAY SHOW EXTENSIVE COASTAL STRATUS...
PILED UP TO THE TOP OF THE PACHECO AND COTTONWOOD PASSES...AND ALSO
INTO THE LOWER SAC VLLY. THIS REFLECTS THE INTRUSION OF MARINE AIR
INLAND TOWARDS THE SAN JOAQUIN VLLY THAT WILL BOOST LLVL COOLING FOR
TDA AND SUN. LATEST FORT ORD PROFILER SHOWS THE MARINE LAYER RISING
CLOSER TO 3000 FT...AND EXPECT A FURTHER DEEPENING THROUGH LATE AFTN
AS IT RESPONDS TO MID-UPPER CYCLONIC CIRCULATION PUSHING EAST.
IN FACT IF THE MARINE LAYER TREND EARLY THIS MORN WERE TO CONTINUE
TO RESPOND MORE ROBUSTLY THAN WHAT WE EXPECT...THE INLAND FLOOD OF
MARINE AIR COULD DROP TEMPS TDA LOWER THAN ADVERTISED. FOR NOW WILL
LEAVE SJV MAX TEMPS UNCHANGED AND CONTINUE TO MONITOR. OVERALL TEMP
TRENDS IN FCST LOOK OK.

THE BOTTOM LINE REMAINS A SOLID COOLING TREND TO BELOW NORMAL LEVELS
FOR THE ENTIRE DISTRICT AT THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN WE NORMALLY SEE OUR
HIGHEST TEMPS. DEEP TROUGH FOR MID SUMMER GETS ENTRENCHED ON THE
WEST COAST FOR A WHILE. INCREASING PRES GRADS NEXT 2 DAYS WILL ALSO
PRODUCE BREEZES AND LOCALLY WINDY CONTITIONS PARTICULARLY NEAR THE
PRONE KERN COUNTY MTN PASSES. WILL MENTION MORE SPECIFIC WINDS IN
SHORT TERM FOR THE MORN UPDATE TO FOLLOW.
