UTAH AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UTAH
330 PM MST TUE FEB 13 2001

SYNOPSIS...A STORM OVER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST WILL MOVE INLAND
AND THROUGH SOUTHERN UTAH TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. A RIDGE ALOFT WILL
MOVE OVER THE AREA THURSDAY

DISCUSSION...DEFORMATION ZONE OVER NORTHWEST UTAH STILL CLINGING TO
LIFE...BUT GETTING VERY WEAK. IT SHOULD NOT BE MUCH OF A FACTOR
OVERNIGHT.

BIG STORY IS S. CA TROUGH AND WHERE IT WILL GO. SOME DIFFERENCES IN
DETAILS OF ETA/AVN. PREFER AVN DUE TO EXCELLENT INITIALIZATION IN
EAST PACIFIC AND ITS SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE OVER LAST FEW RUNS. ETA
HAS BEEN QUITE POOR ON TIMING PRECIPITATION INTO SOUTHWEST UTAH.

AVN TAKES 700 MB CIRCULATION TO JUST SOUTH OF EVANSTON WY BY 12Z
WED. RESULT IS THAT ALTHOUGH HEAVIEST SNOW WILL BE IN SOUTH
TONIGHT...HEAVIEST SNOW TOWARDS MORNING AND MUCH OF WED WILL BE
ACROSS CENTRAL UTAH. IF AVN IS CORRECT THERE WILL BE A TIGHT
GRADIENT ALONG NORTHWEST SIDE OF PRECIPITATION BAND. HAVE GONE WITH
IDEA OF SNOW SOUTH OF LINE FROM EVANSTON TO PROVO TO ELY NEVADA. IF
ETA IS CORRECT...EVERYTHING SHOULD BE SHIFTED SOUTH ABOUT 75 MILES.
LINGERING SHOWERS INTO WED NIGHT...ESPECIALLY IN AREAS FAVORED BY
NORTHWEST FLOW SUCH AS I-15 CORRIDOR FROM CDC TO PVU. THURSDAY LOOKS
DRY OVER THE ENTIRE AREA.

IN EXTENDED...CRUX OF THE PROBLEM IS HOW MODELS HANDLE TROUGH/LOW
CENTERED AT 57N/143W AT 22Z. YESTERDAY ALL MODELS EXCEPT EC TRIED
SOME MANNER OF PHASING THIS TROUGH SOUTH ALONG PACNW COAST WITH
LOWER LATITUDE TROUGH. 12Z/12TH EC CAME AROUND TO THIS SOLUTION. THEN
00Z MRF GAVE UP ON THIS AND TOOK TROUGH INTO NORTHERN PLAINS. 12Z
AVN NOW BACK TO PREVIOUS IDEA AND DROPS BROAD ARCTIC FRONT THAT
EXTENDS FROM MT WEST TO WESTERN WASHINGTON SOUTHWARD. UKMET HAS BEEN
CONSISTENT AND IS VERY SIMILAR TO LATEST AVN...SO HAVE BASED
FORECAST ON THIS IDEA. A VERY MOIST WESTERLY FLOW DEVELOPS ON SOUTH
SIDE OF ARCTIC FRONT AS DYNAMIC LIFT AND POSSIBLE CONNECTION TO
LOWER LATITUDE TROUGH DEVELOPS. GIVEN MODELS INABILITY TO SETTLE ON
A SOLUTION STILL LOW CONFIDENCE IN THU NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY
PERIOD. SLC 4531 CDC 9742 DUNN

.SLC...SNOW ADVISORY ALL OF SOUTHWEST UTAH TONIGHT AND WED...
