SOUTH PLAINS AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LUBBOCK TX 229 AM CDT THU AUG 9 2001 PREVIOUS MODEL RUNS MOVED UPPER LOW FURTHER WEST THAN CURRENT LOCATION. THIS HAS ALLOWED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO AFFECT THE EASTERN AREAS MORE THAN FORECAST THE PAST FEW DAYS. WITH UPPER LOW AND TROUGH AXIS NEAR THE NM/TX BORDER AND DISTURBANCES TO MOVE NORTH ACROSS OUR REGION...WILL NOT DEVIATE MUCH FROM PAST COUPLE OF DAYS AS THIS FEATURE WILL REMAIN NEARLY STATIONARY. THERE IS ENOUGH INSTABILITY AND MOISTURE TO HANG ON TO AT LEAST A SLIGHT CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS TODAY. CHANCES FOR RAIN WILL INCREASE THROUGH THE SHORT TERM PERIOD. THERE IS A CHALLENGE THIS MORNING IN DECIDING WHICH MODEL WILL BE MORE CORRECT IN THE POSITION OF THE FRONTAL BOUNDARY THROUGH SATURDAY. BELIEVE IT WILL MAKE IT INTO THE NORTHERN COUNTIES FRIDAY MORNING SOMETIME. PROBLEM COMES IN DECIDING WHAT TO DO WITH TEMPERATURES. WILL BUMP UP TEMPS SLIGHTLY IN THE SOUTHERN FA IN CASE FRONT NEVER DOES PUSH INTO THIS AREA. 850 TEMPS INDICATE ON BOTH THE AVN AND ETA THAT KEEPING FRONT IN THE NORTHERN FA IS REASONABLE. WILL LOOK AT THE MESOETA WHEN IT COMES IN TO SEE IF IT IS CONSISTENT WITH THIS THINKING. HOPEFULLY THE COMBINATION OF THE FRONT AND UPPER LOW WILL BRING A GOOD CHANCE OF RAIN ACROSS THE WHOLE AREA.
