315 PM CDT THU AUG 9 2001

THE MUCH ANTICIPATED COLD FRONT CURRENTLY LOCATED IN THE FAR
NORTHWEST CWA HAS SLOWED IT/S SOUTHWARD PROGRESS TODAY. AT
1930Z TEMPS BEHIND THE FRONT ARE IN THE 80S WHILE TEMPS AHEAD
OF THE FRONT ARE GENERALLY IN THE MIDDLE 90S TO 101. SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPING ACROSS THE CWA THIS AFTERNOON AND WE
EXPECT THIS ACTIVITY TO CONTIUE THROUGH TONIGHT. WILL WEIGH FIRST
PERIOD POPS LARGELY ON RADAR TRENDS. AM LITTLE CONCERNED ABOUT THE
OKLAHOMA PANHANDLES WHERE TRAINING CELLS AND STEERING FLOW VERY WEAK
MAY LEAD TO LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL. NO HEADLINES AT THIS TIME BUT WE
WILL MENTION LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN IN THE ZONES. WE WILL ALSO NEED TO
MONITOR FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF STRONG WINDS AS FORECAST SOUNDINGS
TAKE ON AN INVERTED V PROFILE. JUST HOW FAR SOUTH THE COLD FRONT
MAKES IT WILL BE LARGELY DETERMINED ON THE AMOUNT OF CONVECTION.
CURRENT THINKING IS TO BRING THE FRONT TO OUR SOUTHERN ZONES BY
EARLY MORNING. WILL CONTINUE THE CURRENT CHANCE POPS THROUGH SATURDAY
NIGHT WITH THE FRONTAL BOUNDARY IN THE AREA...THE UPPER LOW REMAINING
OVER CENTRAL NM AND SOME WEAK DISTURBANCES ROLLING OUT OF THE ROCKIES
IN NORTHWEST FLOW ALOFT. ONLY OTHER CHANGE TO THE SHORT TERM PERIOD
WAS TO RAISE TEMPS A LITTLE.

IN THE EXTENDED (SUN-THU)...SLIGHT CHANCE POPS ALREADY IN THE
FORECAST FOR SUNDAY AND WE WILL INCLUDE MONDAY AS WELL...AS THE NEW
MEXICO LOW GETS SHEARED APART AND NORTHWEST FLOW ALOFT TAKES OVER.
WILL CONTINUE THE DRY FORECAST FOR TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY AS 5H
RIDGE EXPANDS OVER THE SW US. MRF IS THE ODD MODEL OUT IN BRINGING
AS STRONG TROUGH THROUGH THE GREAT LAKES REGION ON THURSDAY. THIS
WOULD BRING MORE NORTHWEST FLOW ALOFT TO THE AREA AND A SLIGHT CHANCE
FOR PRECIPITATION. HOWEVER...GIVEN RECENT MRF PERFORMANCE AND RUN TO
RUN CHANGES...WILL STICK TO OUR GUNS AND CONTINUE THE DRY FORECAST.

The high winds blew over a one hundred plus foot radio tower onto a building and fence of the Cow Feed Company in Dalhart. Also damaged was the Junior High School in Dalhart when a one hundred and ten foot communication tower fell on the roof. The high winds took a roof off of a building in Dalhart. Two trees were uprooted and several tree limbs were blown down.
