AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG SC 1010 AM EDT SUN JUL 29 2001 VERY MOIST AIR MASS IN PLACE TODAY ACROSS THE ENTIRE FORECAST AREA WITH PW ON GSO MORNING RAOB AROUND 2.1 INCHES...170 PERCENT OF NORMAL...AND SURFACE BOUNDARY ANALYZED TO THE NORTH. SATELLITE/KGSP RADAR SHOWS AREA OF WARM-TOPPED CONVECTION MOVING SLOWLY EAST BUT REMAINING OVER NC. MAIN CONCERN FOR TODAY IS THE POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING...AND CURRENT FLASH FLOOD WATCH HAS THE GREATEST THREAT AREA OUTLINED NICELY. WILL NOT EXPAND AT THIS TIME. THE CURRENT SET OF ZONES IS IN NEED OF SEVERAL ADJUSTMENTS BASED ON THE CURRENT LOCATION OF THE PRECIP. THE NC SRN PIEDMONT ZONES WILL BE BROKEN OUT TO GO WITH A CATEGORICAL POP BASED ON THE LIGHT RAIN ALREADY MOVING ACROSS THAT AREA. THE SOUTHERNMOST ZONES WILL ALSO BE BROKEN OUT TO BRING THE PRECIP IN DURING THE LATER PART OF THE AFTERNOON. TEMPS ARE AT LEAST A CATEGORY OR TWO TOO WARM OWING TO THE EXTENSIVE CLOUD COVER AND ONGOING PRECIP ACROSS ALL BUT THE SOUTHERNMOST ZONES...IF THEY GET A FEW BREAKS IN THE CLOUD COVER. Numerous roads remained flooded, and new ones began to flood as streams, creeks and rivers, already swollen from heavy rain earlier in the day, overflowed their banks. The French Broad River flooded River Road, near the state line north of Hot Springs, closing it for two days.
