AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BINGHAMTON NY 340 AM EST SUN NOV 25 2001 REGIONAL RADAR LOOP SHOWS SCATTERED LIGHT SHOWERS ACROSS THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE FORECAST AREA EARLY THIS MORNING, WHILE THE MAIN BAND OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ALONG THE COLD FRONT IS BACK OVER THE EASTERN OHIO VALLEY. THIS STEADIER BAND OF PRECIPITATION WILL MAKE GOOD PROGRESS TODAY THROUGH NY AND PA AS THE FRONT PROPELS EASTWARD. THE BEST SUPPORTING DYNAMICS ARE EXPECTED TO LIFT WELL NORTH AND WEST OF OUR REGION TODAY INTO SOUTHERN CANADA, SO I STILL WOULDNT BE SURPRISED TO SEE THE SHOWERS DIMINISH SOME IN INTENSITY AS THE DAY WEARS ON. HOWEVER, CURRENT ECHO COVERAGE AND GOOD LOW LEVEL JET PROVIDING GULF MOISTURE TO THE SYSTEM ARGUES FOR AT LEAST A BRIEF SHOT OF DECENT SHOWER ACTIVITY AS THE FRONT NEARS LATER TODAY. I PONDERED TOSSING IN THE CHANCE OF A THUNDERSTORM THIS AFTERNOON, BUT DECIDED TO LEAVE IT OUT OWING TO LACK OF INSTABILITY AS THE COLDEST MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES BYPASS OUR AREA TO THE WEST AND NORTH. TONIGHT, THE COLD FRONT QUICKLY MOVES TO THE COAST AND DRIER AIR ENTERS IN ITS WAKE. AS A RESULT, WELL CONTINUE WITH OUR CURRENT THEME OF POSSIBLE SHOWERS EARLY FOR MUCH OF THE AREA, THEN PARTIAL CLEARING. DEPENDING ON HOW FAST THE WINDS SLACKEN AND SURFACE DEW POINTS ACTUALLY DROP, SOME FOG FORMATION IS NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION OVERNIGHT. Telephone pole with transformer fell on State Fair Boulevard next to the the Interstate 690 West on ramp. Utility pole also fell in Central Square. A total of 5,000 customers were without power.
Tree fell and snapped two utility poles on Howard Avenue on the east side of Binghamton. 15 electric customers were affected. Also 50 other customer in Whitney Point and Greene (in Chenango County) had power interruptions.
