AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BINGHAMTON NY 305 PM EDT TUE AUG 21 2001 UPPER TROUGH LIFTS OUT THIS EVENING. ANY LINGERING SHOWERS SHOULD DISSIPATE AS THE SUN GOES DOWN. WILL NOT MENTION IN THE ZONES. SKIES SHOULD CLEAR OUT AND TEMPS SHOULD FALL INTO THE MID TO UPPER 50S. SOME PATCHY VALLEY FOG LATE. A NICE DAY ON TAP FOR WED WITH MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES AND TEMPS AROUND 80. SOME MODEL DIFFERENCES IN HANDLING OF SHORT WAVES/CONVECTIVE COMPLEXES FOR WED NT INTO THURSDAY. FORECAST WILL BE BASED PRIMARILY ON THE ETA WHICH I BELIEVE IS HANDLING THE CONVECTION MOST REALISTICALLY. ALL OF THE MODELS DEPICT RATHER STABLE AIR ACROSS THE REGION INTO THURSDAY MORNING. THE NGM AND ESPECIALLY THE AVN...WITH A STRONG VORT OVER NE PA ALREADY AT 00Z THURSDAY...SEEM TO BLOW THE CONVECTION RIGHT THROUGH THE STABLE AIR. THE ETA ON THE OTHER HAND HAS A VERY FOCUSED LOW LEVEL JET FEEDING THE CONVECTION ACROSS THE OHIO VALLEY...BUT THAT JET NEVER TRANSLATES EAST. AS A RESULT...THE CONVECTION MAKES THE OLD RIGHT (SOUTHWARD) TURN AND NEVER REALLY GETS HERE. GIVEN THE MID AND UPPER LEVEL FLOW PATTERN...THIS MAKES A LOT OF SENSE. WHILE THE AVN AND NGM BOTH SEEM TO WANT TO TRACK SOMETHING AT LEAST ACROSS NE PA...A STRONG SIGN THAT SOMETHING ISNT QUITE RIGHT IS THAT THE MOS POPS FROM BOTH MODELS HAVE TROUBLE GETTING HIGHER THAN 40-50%...AND THE THUNDERSTORM PROBS ARE QUITE UNIMPRESSIVE. EVEN THE ETA DOES SHOW A MOISTENING UP THE LATTER PART OF WED NT INTO THURSDAY (THE K INDICES AND PWS ALSO COME UP). WHILE I THINK THE MAIN CONVECTION WILL STAY TO THE SOUTH AND WEST...SOME BLOW OFF FROM THE NORTHERN EXTEND OF THE COMPLEX(S) MAY BRING SOME SHOWERS ACROSS THE SOUTHERN ZONES SO WILL KEEP A CHC RW- FOR WED NT. WITH THE INCREASE IN MOISTURE...AND ALSO A FRONT STARTING TO DROP DOWN FROM THE NW...WILL GO WITH A 40% POP EVERYWHERE THURSDAY. STRONGEST ACTIVITY IS STILL LIKELY TO BE SOUTH OF I-80. LOWS WED NT WITHIN A COUPLE OF DEGREES OF 60 AND HIGHS ON THURSDAY AGAIN NEAR 80.
