MOJAVE DESERT/SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAS VEGAS NV
407 PM PDT THU JUL 5 2001

SYNOPSIS...A FLOW OF MONSOON MOISTURE WILL REMAIN ACROSS THE
SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN AND MOJAVE DESERT INTO THE WEEKEND. THIS MOIST
AND UNSTABLE AIR WILL RESULT IN SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS EACH DAY.

DISCUSSION...BUSY DAY AND COULD BE EVEN MORE ACTIVE FRIDAY FOR PARTS
OF THE FORECAST AREA. MID AND UPPER-LEVEL HIGH OVER COLORADO WILL
CONTINUE TO SLOWLY DRIFT EAST THROUGH SATURDAY...MAINTAINING A
SOUTHERLY FLOW OF MID LEVEL MOISTURE INTO THE REGION. LOW LEVEL
MOISTURE (DEW POINTS IN THE 55-65 DEGREE RANGE) WILL REMAIN IN PLACE
AND LIKELY INCREASE SOME PROVIDING PLENTY OF CAPE AND INSTABILITY
FOR THUNDERSTORMS. STORM ENVIRONMENT WILL CONTINUE TO FAVOR BOTH
SEVERE AND FLASH FLOOD THREAT.

TONIGHT AND FRIDAY...THE MOST SIGNIFICANT FEATURE TO WATCH WILL BE
THE SHORT WAVE MOVING NORTH ALONG THE BAJA COAST. JET MAX WITH THIS
FEATURE FORECAST TO MOVE UP INTO SOUTHERN CA/NV FRIDAY MORNING.
MODELS HANDLE DIVERGENCE AND FORCING WITH THE JET FEATURE
DIFFERENTLY. POSSIBLE THAT AS JET APPROACHES ADDITIONAL
THUNDERSTORMS WILL FIRE LATER TONIGHT ACROSS SOUTHERN CA/AZ AND MOVE
QUICKLY INTO THE REGION. UPPER LEVEL DIVERGENCE THEN INCREASES
FRIDAY AND THIS ALONE COULD SUPPORT WIDESPREAD (STRONGER?) STORMS.
TOO CLOSE TO CALL AND HAVE RAMPED UP CHANCES FOR STORMS
TONIGHT/FRIDAY FOR MOST ZONES. DID NOT USE ANY DIURNAL TREND TO
THUNDERSTORMS TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY FOR SOUTHERN ZONES WITH THE
UNCERTAINTY IN DYNAMICS. DEPENDING ON HOW THINGS DEVELOP
TONIGHT...FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR CLARK...MOHAVE AND SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES MAY HAVE TO BE EXTENDED OR ANOTHER ONE ISSUED BY FOLLOWING
SHIFTS FOR FRIDAY. STAY TUNED! RETURNED TO BASIC MONSOON (SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORM) FORECAST FOR SATURDAY AS NO ADDITIONAL DISTURBANCES
INDICATED AT THIS TIME.

EXTENDED OFFERS LITTLE HOPE FOR ANY SIGNIFICANT DRYING TREND. AFTER
SHIFTING INTO THE PLAINS ON SUNDAY...UPPER HIGH DRIFTS BACK WESTWARD
TOWARD FOUR CORNERS REGION MON-WED. NO DOUBT THERE WILL BE SOME DAYS
WHERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE ISOLATED OR CONFINED JUST TO HIGHER TERRAIN
(LIKELY SUNDAY AND MONDAY) BUT IN NO WAY CAN THEY BE ELIMINATED FROM
FORECAST. FELT IT PRUDENT TO CONTINUE DAILY MENTION OF THUNDERSTORMS
FOR ALL ZONES WITH TEMPERATURES NEAR NORMAL.
