AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PEACHTREE CITY GA 345 PM EDT THU JUL 5 2001 SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS MOVING INTO NORTHWEST GEORGIA THIS AFTERNOON IN ADVANCE OF WEAKENING FRONT NEAR TENNESSEE-KENTUCKY BORDER. MODELS TRY TO BRING THIS FRONT AT LEAST INTO NORTHERN GEORGIA BUT WASHES OUT QUICKLY. HOWEVER DRIER AIR DOES SEEM TO WORK INTO THE AREA WHICH SHOULD SQUASH MOST CONVECTION NEXT 2 DAYS. STRONGEST CONVECTION STAYING WEST OF GEORGIA SO FAR THIS AFTERNOON BUT COULD BE SOME ISOLATED NEAR SEVERE THIS EVENING WORK INTO NORTHWEST AND WESTCENTRAL PORTION OF STATE SINCE CAPES IN THE 2000-2500 RANGE. A LOT OF THE CONVECTION SHOULD BEGIN DIMINISHING BY 8 PM BUT WILL KEEP 3O-50 PERCENT FOR TONIGHT AS POCKET OF MOISTURE WORKS ACROSS THE AREA. LOOKS LIKE ENOUGH MOISTURE IN CENTRAL GEORGIA FRIDAY THAT 20 PERCENT LOOKS IN ORDER. UPPER HIGH THAT IS CURRENTLY OVER COLORADO BUILDS EASTWARD INTO CENTRAL PLAINS WHICH PUSHES HIGHER TEMPERATURES INTO GEORGIA. The public reported a few trees down in Rome and the Floyd county 911 center reported a few trees down at Cave Spring.
The Summerville News reported that the county 911 center received extensive damage to computer equipment because of a lightning strike, either to the building or the nearby tower. The entire 911 center was briefly shut down when the lightning strike occurred before backup systems could be employed. A majority of the computers, telephone lines, recording equipment, communications equipment, and other pieces of equipment were either totally destroyed or shut down during the event.
The Bartow county 911 center reported that five trees were down near Acworth in the extreme southeast part of the county and the public reported that a few trees were also down in Euharlee.
The Paulding county 911 center reported that trees and power lines were down on East Paulding Drive. A meteorologist from the Weather Channel reported that two trees were down and estimated winds to be 65 mph at another location in Dallas.
An amateur radio operator reported dime size hail.
The Rockdale county 911 center reported that two trees were down in town and the fire station reported that there were other trees with broken limbs.
