AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAND RAPIDS MI 1215 PM EDT SAT JUL 21 2001 WEAK VORT TRAVERSING THE REGION THIS MORNING PROVIDED THE SYNOPTIC BOOST TO REPEATEDLY INITIATE CONVECTION OVER SOUTHWEST LOWER MI. SHORTWAVE WAS ENOUGH TO PRODUCE A LOW LEVEL RESPONSE IN THE FORM OF A 25 KNOT LOW LEVEL JET WHICH IS THE STRONGEST LLJ WE HAVE SEEN IN THE AREA IN QUITE A WHILE. AS THE SHORTWAVE CONTINUES ITS SOUTHEAST TRACK...EXPECT CONVECTION TO DIMINISH FROM NORTHWEST TO SOUTHEAST. ATMOSPHERE HAS BEEN WORKED OVER PRETTY GOOD AND IT WILL TAKE QUITE A BIT OF LOW LEVEL CONVERGENCE TO OVERCOME THE NVA IN THE WAKE OF THE SHORTWAVE TO PRODUCE FURTHER CONVECTION. THE CONVECTION SHOULD BE EXITING THE SOUTHEAST PORTION OF THE FORECAST AREA BETWEEN 300 AND 430 PM. WILL LEAVE IN AN ISOLATED SHOWER OR STORM POSSIBLE NORTH GIVEN THE POSSIBLE BOUNDARIES IN THE AREA BOTH LAKE AND CONVECTION INDUCED. SCATTERED POPS SHOULD COVER THINGS ACROSS THE SOUTH. AGAIN...EXPECT THINGS TO TAPER OFF IN THE SOUTHWEST BY ABOUT 200 PM AND 400 PM IN THE SOUTHEAST. PARTLY SUNNY...WARM AND HUMID CONDITIONS WILL PERSIST AGAIN TODAY. NOT MUCH CHANGE TO THE GOING WINDS AND TEMPS. WITH FAIRLY LIGHT WINDS THROUGH THE COLUMN DO NOT EXPECT MUCH IN THE WAY OF SEVERE THIS AFTERNOON. IF FURTHER STORMS DEVELOP...HEAVY RAIN WOULD BE THE MAIN THREAT. AN ISOLATED WIND EVENT POSSIBLE WITH A CORE COLLAPSE AS WELL. ZONES ALREADY OUT. REPORTS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES OF RAIN WERE COMMON ACROSS KENT COUNTY WITH AN OUTLIER OF ABOUT 5 INCHES IN THE DUTTON AREA FROM AN OFF DUTY NWS EMPLOYEE. A large tree was blown down and blocked the intersection of Kirby and Waubascon roads. Several tree limbs that were two to three inches in diameter were also blown down.
Several trees and power lines were blown down in Battle Creek and across Emmit township. One tree fell on power lines and a parked car.
