Heavy rain occurred in the upper Copper River and Nabesna River Basins July 20 - 23. It took a number of days for water to reach the lower basin, where migrating stream channels of the Copper River washed out the road between Cordova and the Million Dollar Bridge. This is an ongoing problem. DOT plans to elevate the road bed during the 2002 construction season.Since the only gauge on the Copper River is on the Million Dollar Bridge, it is very difficult to track water flowing into the Copper River Delta. In addition, lack of precipitation gauges in the upper reaches of the Copper River Basin means that the forecasters have very little to work with. These types of events are problematic. It is likely that the road will continue periodic washouts until permanent repairs are effected.
