The circulation around a large area of low pressure developing over the upper Mississippi valley brought a mixture of precipitation to the state. In the mountains where the precipitation was mostly in the form of snow, 4 to 7 inches of snow accumulated. South of the mountains, several inches of snow accumulated in the foothills before the precipitation changed to sleet and freezing rain. Along the coast and inland from the coast, freezing rain glazed roads and trees with about 1/4 inch of ice, causing numerous accidents. Along the immediate coast, the precipitation eventually changed to rain before ending as temperatures warmed above freezing.
