Deaths and injuries are direct and indirect together, as the offices filed them. Damage is property and crops in the dollars of the year, not adjusted for inflation, and only where an office estimated it.
The episode as NWS DMX wrote it up.
Another round of elevated convection moved into Iowa shortly after sunrise for the second day in a row. The synoptic situation was very much unchanged from the morning before. A stationary front extended from the Nebraska Panhandle into far northwest Iowa and into Wisconsin. Aloft a fast west to northwest flow of air was in place as the sub-tropical ridge aloft was firmly in place over the central U.S. Dew Point temperatures were in the low to mid 70s at sunrise, making for a very unstable airmass. The airmass was capped so convection was not able to initiate from the surface in spite of a weak boundary which was left across Iowa from the previous days convection. As the thunderstorms moved into Iowa, a small cluster of storms raced east at over 50 MPH in what was a mini Derecho. As the storms moved through western Iowa, Sac County was the first to be hit. Seventy MPH winds downed several trees in the southern part of the county with reports of one out building being destroyed. The storms weakened after that until they reached central Iowa. Deeper moisture aid in the intensification of the storms in Boone County. High winds moved through Boon with several trees being blown down in town. The high winds continued as the storm moved through Story County. Most areas reported winds around 50 MPH, however the storm began to increase as it moved into the Nevada area. Several large tree limbs were downed and a 14 inch diameter pine tree was snapped off. Winds of 70 to 75 MPH were reported with the storm as it moved into the town of Marshalltown in Marshall County. Quite a bit of damage was reported to trees in the town itself. High winds continued with the storm as it raced across Tama County as well. Winds of 70 to 75 MPH were reported in the towns of Tama and Dysart, causing considerable tree and power line damage.

NWS Des Moines, IA wrote its last area forecast discussion before the first event at Jul 8, 2:00 AM CST, 5 hours earlier.
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DES MOINES IA 300 AM CDT SUN JUL 8 2001 OVERALL PATTERN SHIFT TO A MORE AMPLIFIED UPPER RIDGE OVER THE ROCKIES UNDERWAY AND STILL FORECAST BY MODELS INTO MIDWEEK. RESULTANT NORTHWESTERLY FLOW ALLOWS STUBBORN FRONTAL BOUNDARY TO SLOWLY SAG SOUTH INTO N MO EARLY IN THE WEEK. MODELS CONTINUE TO AGREE ON LARGER SCALE FEATURES BUT CONTINUE TO STINK ON THE QPF. APPEARS AVN IS LESSOR OF ALL EVILS BASED ON CURRENT RADAR IMAGERY. IN GENERAL ALL MODELS FOCUS FRONTAL RELATED WEAK LOWER LEVEL THETA-E CONVERGENCE AND BAND OF UVV OVER THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE CWA... WHICH SHIFTS SOUTH OF THE AREA LATER MONDAY. LAYER OF ELEVATED WARM CAPPING TEMPERATURES HAS COOLED A LITTLE BIT BUT MODELS CONTINUE TO DEPICT A FAIR AMOUNT OF NEGATIVE AREA ON FORECAST SOUNDINGS OVER AREA. AS A RESULT WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP POPS ON THE LOW SIDE. WILL BASE FIRST PERIOD OF FORECAST ON CURRENT CONVECTIVE COMPLEX OVER CENTRAL NEBRASKA. NORTH PLATTE RADAR SHOWING SOME ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT/STRENGTHENING UP TOWARD KONL. THIS CLUSTER SHOULD CONTINUE TO MOVE EAST IN DEEP LAYER WESTERLY FLOW ALONG NORTHERN EDGE OF THERMAL RIDGE AND ELEVATED CONVERGENCE ZONE. IF THE SYSTEM HOLD TOGETHER IT WOULD MOVE INTO THE WESTERN CWA MID TO LATE MORNING. WILL NEED TO ADD LOW POPS SOUTH WITH THIS IN MIND. IN ADDITION...JUST GETTING SOME INITIAL AC DEVELOPMENT OVER CENTRAL IA. APPEARS BEST CHANCE FOR PRECIPITATION WILL BE CENTRAL AND SOUTH BUT WILL MAINTAIN LOW POPS NORTH DUE TO UNCERTAINTY IN LOW CONFIDENCE FORECAST. DRIER AIR MOVING INTO THE NORTH SHOULD SHUT DOWN LOW PRECIPITATION CHANCES COME MONDAY WHILE BEST CONVERGENCE AXIS SHIFTS INTO THE FAR SOUTH. MOS CONTINUES TO LOOK OK ON TEMPS. CONVECTIVE DEBRIS WILL PLAY HAVOC ON TEMPS AND HEAT ADVISORY TODAY. IF CLOUDS THIN ENOUGH CURRENT CONFIGURATION LOOKS OK. ALTHOUGH DAYTIME HEAT INDICES WILL CONTINUE TO BE HIGH OVER WEST CENTRAL IA...ENOUGH NIGHTTIME COOLING HAS OCCURRED TO KEEP THEM JUST UNDER CRITERIA. WILL LEAVE HEAT ADVSRY AS IS THOUGH IF CONVECTION AND DENSE MID/HIGH LEVEL CLOUDINESS OVER NEBRASKA LINGERS INTO SW IA THROUSGH THE EARLY AFTERNOON...ADVSRY CRITERIA WILL NOT BE MET. .DSM...HEAT ADVY THRU SUN ALG S OF I80.
