March 2001 was one of the wettest March's on record for north and central Georgia. In the case of Columbus, it was the wettest month in history. Frequent heavy rain and thunderstorm events occurred during the month as a very active southern jet stream remained in place. Columbus received 13.30 inches of rain during the month, exceeding the previous record of 12.53 which occurred in 1952 and exceeding the normal rainfall for March by 7.53 inches. This also made it the wettest month ever recorded in Columbus since records had been started in 1946. Just on March 3rd alone, Columbus recorded 4.40 inches of rain. A similar story was repeated across the remainder of the state. Atlanta had 9.07 inches of rain, which was 3.30 inches above normal, Athens had 8.53 inches of rain, which was 3.07 inches above normal, and Macon recorded 9.83 inches of rain, which was 5.04 inches above normal.

PATCHY LIGHT RAIN ACROSS CENTRAL GEORGIA DISSIPATED DURING THE
EVENING. WILL DROP MENTION OF PRECIP OUT OF FORECAST FOR THE REST OF
THE NIGHT. BRIEF SHOT AT DRYING HAS PRODUCED LARGE HOLES IN THE
CLOUD COVER OVER THE FORECAST AREA. HOWEVER...DEEP MOISTURE IS
SPILLING OVER UPPER RIDGE LINE UPSTREAM. MID AND HIGH CLOUDS ON
SATELLITE IMAGERY APPEAR TO BE READY TO INVADE THE AREA BEFORE
DAYBREAK.

CONVECTION ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER MAY GENERATE A WEAK IMPULSE
THAT COULD BREAK THROUGH THE RIDGE AND BRING PATCHES OF LIGHT
RAIN TO WESTCENTRAL GEORGIA THURSDAY. WILL ADD LOW POPS TO THAT
AREA.

MINIMUM TEMPS OVERNIGHT LOOK TOO LOW OVER CENTRAL GEORGIA WHERE
RADIATIONAL COOLING WILL BE AT A MINIMUM. COLD AIR ADVECTION
