SOUTHWEST OREGON/NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MEDFORD OR 230 PM PDT MON JUL 09 2001 12Z ETA/MESOETA/NGM/AVN IN. THE OVERALL SYNOPTIC PATTERN THIS MORNING IS THE SAME AS IT HAS BEEN FOR THE PAST SEVERAL DAYS. A STRONG UPPER HIGH OVER OKLAHOMA WILL REMAIN NEARLY STATIONARY FOR A FEW MORE DAYS...AND A WEAK UPPER TROUGH WILL REMAIN OFF THE WEST COAST. THIS WILL MAKE FOR GENERALLY SOUTHERLY FLOW OVER SOUTHERN OREGON/NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND THAT MEANS AFTERNOON/EVENING THUNDERSTORMS ARE A POSSIBILITY. THUNDERSTORMS HAVE DEVELOPED THIS AFTERNOON SOUTH AND JUST TO THE EAST OF THE FORECAST AREA. PLENTY OF CUMULUS HAVE FORMED OVER ALL OF THE FORECAST AREA FROM THE CASCADES EAST AND OVER SISKIYOU COUNTY. THUNDERSTORMS ARE A POSSIBILITY OVER ALL OF THIS AREA LATER THIS AFTERNOON...SO WILL ADD A CHANCE OF EVENING THUNDERSTORMS IN THOSE AREAS. SOME OF THE STORMS THAT FORM OVER THE SISKIYOUS MAY MOVE OUT OVER JACKSON AND JOSEPHINE COUNTIES...SO WILL ADD A SLIGHT CHANCE THIS EVENING THERE. TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY LOOK GOOD FOR AFTERNOON/EVENING THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY BECAUSE THE HEATING WONT HAVE TO DO IT ALONE THEN...THERE ARE SOME SHORT WAVES EMBEDDED IN THE SOUTHERLY FLOW THAT WILL MOVE OVER THE FORECAST AREA. THE OTHER FORECAST PROBLEM IS THE MARINE LAYER. AS EXPECTED...THE STRATUS HAS FILLED IN ALONG THE COAST. EXPECT THE COAST TO SEE LOW CLOUDS AND FOG EACH NIGHT WITH AFTERNOON CLEARING. INLAND PENETRATION WILL BE LIMITED TO THE COQUILLE AND WESTERN UMPQUA VALLEYS TONIGHT...BUT THE SHORT WAVE ACTIVITY DURING THE NEXT FEW DAYS WILL ALLOW THE LAYER TO THICKEN A BIT...SO EXPECT A GRADUAL INCREASE IN OVERNIGHT COVERAGE IN THE UMPQUA VALLEY. EXTENDED...THE STRONG HIGH OVER OKLAHOMA WILL RETROGRADE TO THE NEW MEXICO AREA BY THURSDAY AND THE TROUGH OFFSHORE WILL WEAKEN A BIT IN RESPONSE TO THE RIDGING. THIS WILL SHIFT THE FLOW ALOFT FROM SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST AND SHUNT THE THUNDERSTORMS OFF TO THE EAST. SO...THE ENTIRE EXTENDED PERIOD (THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY) WILL BE DRY. EXPECT THE MARINE LAYER DEPTH TO INCREASE A BIT WITH STRONGER ONSHORE FLOW...SO OVERNIGHT LOW CLOUDS AND FOG WILL CONTINUE TO SPREAD IN THE UMPQUA AND POSSIBLY THE ROGUE VALLEYS.
