Area forecast discussion, Jul 13, 1:55 PM PST, 5 minutes before
INTERIOR CENTRAL CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY - HANFORD CA
255 PM PDT FRI JUL 13 2001

CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY TEMPERATURES RUNNING AS MUCH
AS 10 DEGREES ABOVE EQUIVALENT THURSDAY READINGS...AS THE MARINE AIR
HAS MIXED OUT AND HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT BUILDS IN. HOWEVER...THIS
WARM-UP WILL BE SHORT-LIVED AS THE UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH OFF THE COAST
WILL MAKE LANDFALL OVERNIGHT.

THE GOES WATER-VAPOR LOOP SHOWS A SHORT-WAVE LIFTING INTO OREGON AND
WASHINGTON AS IT ROTATES THROUGH THE TROUGH. THE NEXT WAVE IS
INDICATED BY A PRONOUNCED VORTICITY MAXIMUM AT 37N/129W...WITH THE
NEXT UPSTREAM SHORT-WAVE AT 52N/142W. THE VORTICITY IS FORECAST TO
MOVE ACROSS NORTHERN CALIFORNIA SATURDAY...BUT WILL STAY NORTH OF
THE HANFORD WARNING/FORECAST AREA. THE MID-LEVEL MOISTURE OVER THE
REGION WILL BE LIMITED...SO EXPECT MINIMAL IMPACT ON CENTRAL
CALIFORNIA/S WEATHER FROM THE VORTICITY.

THE TROUGH AXIS IS FORECAST TO MOVE ONTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST/
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST BY 12Z SATURDAY. THIS WILL ALLOW THE
MARINE LAYER TO REDEEPEN AND AGAIN PUSH INTO THE CENTRAL VALLEY.
THE INFLUX OF MARINE AIR WILL BRING WINDY CONDITIONS TO THE SAN
JOAQUIN VALLEY...ESPECIALLY ON THE WEST SIDE...AND AROUND 5-7 DEGREES
COOLING. TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE MID 80S TO AROUND 90 SATURDAY...
AND IN THE 80S SUNDAY. THESE ARE UNSEASONABLY COOL RERADINGS...AND
WILL APPROACH LOW MAXIMUM RECORDS FOR FRESNO AND BAKERSFIELD.

ABOVE THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY AND THE LOWER FOOTHILLS...THE 12Z
MODELS HAVE 1-2 DEGREES C COOLING EACH DAY AT 850 MB THROUGH THE
WEEKEND...SO HAVE TRENDED MOST MOUNTAIN/DESERT TEMPERATURES DOWN 2-4
DEGREES DAILY. THE UPSTREAM SHORT-WAVE WILL MOVE INTO CENTRAL
CALIFORNIA SUNDAY NIGHT/MONDAY...AND THE AVN HAS -4 C COOLING AT 850
MB MONDAY. THIS MAY BE A BIT OVERDONE...BUT FULLY EXPECT
TEMPERATURES TO BOTTOM OUT AROUND 10-15 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL MONDAY
AND TUESDAY.

THE TROUGH WILL BRING LOCALLY GUSTY WINDS TO THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS
OF THE SOUTHERN SIERRA NEVADA AND TEHACHAPI MOUNTAINS BEGINNING
SATURDAY. THESE WINDS ALOFT...PLUS THE MARINE AIR SPILLING THROUGH
THE TEHACHAPI MOUNTAINS...WILL BRING GUSTY CONDITIONS TO THE KERN
COUNTY MOUNTAINS/DESERTS...ESPECIALLY SUNDAY AS THE NEXT SHORT-WAVE
DROPPING THROUGH THE TROUGH APPROACHES CENTRAL CALIFORNIA.

THE UPPER-LEVEL PATTERN IS FORECAST TO REMAIN STATIC THROUGH AT
LEAST MIDWEEK...WITH TROUGHS OVER THE WEST COAST AND OFF THE EAST
COAST ALONG 72W... BRACKETING THE RIDGE OVER TEXAS. THE MRF HOLDS
THE PATTERN IN PLACE THROUGH MOST OF NEXT WEEK...THEN THE RIDGE IS
FORECAST TO AGAIN BUILD BACK INTO CALIFORNIA FOR NEXT WEEKEND FOR
WARMER WEATHER.
